In a two-needle sewing machine for making an ornamental stitch without a cover stitch, at least one intermediate lug (17) is provided which is disposed in side by side relation with respect to an upper thread take-up (13) engaged to the needle bar (7), said intermediate lug, in the absence of a workpiece (4) on the needle plate (8), is brought to a work position in which it interferes with one of the needle threads (4a, 4b) coming from an auxiliary thread take-up (12) being part of a feed unit for the needle threads. In the presence of the intermediate lug (17) in the work position, the orientation of the needle thread (4a) intercepted by said intermediate lug is suitably deviated with respect to the upper thread take-up (13), so as to cause a tension release on the needle thread itself during the raising steps of the needles (3a, 3) towards the upper dead center of their reciprocating motion.

In a trimming sewing machine of the type adapted to carry out a two-thread overedge stitch, provision is made for a hooked element (15) integrally associated with the upper looper (10), which hooked element has an end work portion (15a) disposed in parallel side by side relation with the end work portion (10b) of the upper looper. The hooked element (15) engages the sewing thread (3) carried by the needle (2) at the beginning of the downward stroke of the needle. Following the downward stroke of the upper looper (10), the hooked element (15) drags along the sewing thread (3) beyond the lateral edge (5a) of the workpiece (5). Thus paired finishing portions (17a, 17b) are formed along the sewing thread (3) and they extend from each of the insertion points of the needle (2) into the workpiece (5) as far as close to the lateral edge (5a) of the workpiece (5).

The described sewing machine has a work supporting bed (5) divided into two portions (6, 7) separated from each other by a central slot (8). The parts (2, 3) of a workpiece (M) to be assembled are laid down each on one portion (2, 3) of the work supporting bed (5) and are moved close to each other so that the respective junction edges (G) may mutually match after being vertically folded downwardly within the slot (8). The junction edges (G) thus oriented engage between a needle plate (9) and a presser foot (25) disposed according to vertical planes, for being submitted to the action of feeding and sewing means operating under the work supporting bed.

A top feed unit comprises a vertical-movement kinematic mechanism (19) and a horizontal-movement kinematic mechanism (20) acting on a rocking arm (18) supporting a top feed dog (17) and operated by respective eccentrics (21, 29) fitted to an auxiliary shaft (37). The vertical- and horizontal-movement kinematic mechanisms (29, 20) and the auxiliary shaft (37) are contained in a housing structure (34) which can be detachably engaged to the sewing machine head (7). The auxiliary shaft (37) is connected to an interconnecting stem (41) rotatably connected to the sewing machine arm (6) and driven in rotation, through a toothed belt (46), by the upper drive shaft (8) of the sewing machine (2).

A presser foot having a shoe comprising a pair of mutually facing front portions (5a, 5b) and a pair of rear portions (6a, 6b) in alignment with the front portions (5a, 5b) and connected thereto by a pair of side rocker arms (7a, 7b). The side rocker arms (7a, 7b) are pivotably supported by swinging arms (10a, 10b) linked to a small bearing frame (2). A center rocking arm (15) mounted on the bearing frame (2) acts by a pair of laterally disposed pistons (17a, 17b) on the individual swinging arms (10a, 10b) in order to mutually balance the fulcra of the side rocker arms (7a, 7b). Operating at a longitudinal opening (29) defined between the front portions (5a, 5b) is a fixed knife (32) and a movable knife (33) which are adjustable independently of each other in their vertical positioning relative to the shoe (4).

A working site to stitch manufactured items comprises a supporting frame on which a supporting surface table (2) is defined, which surface is provided with a central area (4) having a first sewing machine (5) disposed thereon which can be used to perform the greatest number of sewing operations on a manufactured item which has to be submitted to a predetermined work cycle. Extending consecutively to the central area is a first side area (6) carrying a second sewing machine (7) adapted to be used to perform operations in intercalated relationship with the sewing operations carried out by the first sewing machine (5). A second side area (8) extending at right angles to the central area (4) on the opposite side with respect to the first side area (6) carries a third sewing machine (9) adapted to be used for trimming operations on the manufactured item as well as further operations in intercalated relationship with the operations to be performed by the first (5) and second (7) sewing machines. The three areas (4), (6), (8) of the supporting surface extend around the user in accordance with ergonomics studies to allow a manufactured item to be easily moved from a sewing machine to another.

A positioning device for advancing a workpiece to and orienting the same in the sewing zone of a sewing unit. The device includes a feed table having a plurality of slots upstream of the sewing zone which are disposed at an angle relative to the line of sewing. A driven endless belt is operatively associated with each slot in the feed table and are disposed so as to partially protrude their respective slot. That portion of the endless belts protruding through their respective slots are caused to engage the underside of a workpiece and are effective in advancing the same to a position in front of the sewing machine's presser foot and in close proximity with a vertical guide wall extending parallel to the line of sewing.

A method and machine for simultaneously forming seams along opposite sides of a garment workpiece in which the edges being sewn are gradually aligned so as to follow rectilinear paths that coincide with the machine's lines of sewing. The excess material of the garment disposed between the opposite sides being sewn is gathered and caused to pass through the area intermediate the lines of sewing. The sewing machine adapted to perform this function is provided with a pair of spaced needle bars that define the machine's lines of sewing and the space between these lines is clear of any interfering elements thus providing an area for the material intermediate the opposite sides to pass which has a width greater than the distance between the lines of sewing.

Method and apparatus for seaming opposed garment edges simultaneously

A worktable for sewing units having sewing machines with free-arm type bases mounted on a support bench. The worktable is operatively connected to the support bench and includes a recess with a configuration conforming to the shape of the sewing machine base. By means of a selectively controlled lifting device, the worktable can be moved to and from operative association with the base as desired to accommodate either tubular seaming or seaming on flat workpieces which require a larger supporting surface.

A device for simultaneously guiding at least two layers of fabric to the stitching instrumentalities of a sewing machine in which a portion of one layer has a greater width than that of the other. The device includes superposed passages with a limiting element within each passage for separately engaging and guiding the edges of the layers of fabric. One of the limiting elements is fixedly held within its respective passage and the other is movable. The movable limiting element serves to align that portion of the layer of wider width with the edge of the adjacent layer prior to joining the layers by an assembly seam.
