A representative embodiment provides for an imaging apparatus including an output tray supported by the imaging apparatus and configured to receive sheet media from a first source and a second source, wherein the first source and the second source are respectively supported by the imaging apparatus. Optionally, the imaging apparatus also includes a detector configured to provide a signal in response to a predetermined accumulation of sheet media from the first source and the second source within the output tray. Another embodiment provides a method of receiving a first sheet media and a second sheet media within a common output tray, including routing the first sheet media from an imaging device into the output tray using a diverter device, and routing the second sheet media from the imaging device into a sheet handling device and then into the output tray using the diverter device.

The present invention is directed to a device and method for building a consumable refill that includes the steps of fabricating a plurality of arrays of detachably connected consumable parts along a first direction, stacking the arrays of detachably connected consumable parts along a second direction and bonding the stacked arrays of detachably connected consumable parts at an outer surface formed by one or more aligned marginal surfaces of the detachably connected consumable parts. In one embodiment, a staple refill includes a number of staple wire sheets stacked along a direction normal to a plane of each of the staple wire sheets. The staple wire sheets are bonded at an outer surface formed by one or more aligned marginal surfaces of the plurality of staple wires.

A finishing device which is configured to receive sheets of imaging media, forming a sheet stack, from an imaging apparatus includes a sheet stack tray to support the sheet stack. The finishing device also includes a sheet stack hold-down device which is operable from a first position to a variable second position. When the hold-down device is in the second position it presses the sheet stack against the sheet stack tray. The finishing device further includes a sensor which can detect the position of the sheet stack hold-down device when it is in the second position, to thereby provide an approximation of the thickness of the sheet stack, based on the then-current second position of the hold-down device.

Methods and apparatus to estimate the thickness of a sheet stack

The present invention is directed to a system and method for building a consumable part refill, which may be a staple refill, the method comprising the steps of fabricating an array of consumable parts detachably connected along a first direction, stacking a plurality of such fabricated arrays of parts, or staple wire plates, along a second direction, and providing an adhesive bond between adjacent ones of this stacked plurality of arrays.

Folding of stapled documents is accomplished by using magnetic force to manipulate the document. The magnetic force is applied to the staples in the document and results in movement of the document when the magnetic force is applied. Since the magnetic force is applied at the staples, paper handling operations, such as folding are accomplished with the document aligned in accordance with a staple line. Magnetic force can further be used to transport documents to desired locations, such as individual output bins.

A method is provided for identifying individual output jobs from an output stack, each output job including a stack of one or more individual sheets. The method includes the steps of: providing a sheet handling device having a sheet delivery device and an output tray, the sheet delivery device operative to move individual sheets from the sheet handling device to the output tray; delivering an output job with the sheet delivery device to the output tray; and delivering a job separation page with the sheet delivery device to the output tray, the job separation page stacked adjacent the output job such that an offset portion of the job separation page extends outwardly of an adjacent edge of the output job; wherein the job separation page is operative to identify one end of the adjacent output job.

Job separation process, system and method for distributing print jobs

Finishing operations on media processing jobs, such as from laser printer or photocopier devices, are performed in an intermediate output bin and subsequently transferred to a final output bin. One or more finishing mechanisms are disposed to cooperate with the intermediate output bin for performing finishing operations on the media in sequential order. A transfer mechanism operates to move the media from finishing operation to finishing operation in the intermediate output bin, and subsequently to the final output bin once the finishing operations are complete. The final output bin is thus capable of storing multiple finished jobs. The finishing operations may be a registration (alignment) process, a binding process, a hole punching process, and the like.
