A system () is disclosed comprising an optical transceiver () and a portable device (). The optical transceiver comprises a laser () configured to generate an optical signal and a port () operable to transmit an optical signal generated by the laser over an optical fiber connected to the port. The portable device comprises a video camera () and an optical display (). The optical transceiver () is configured to transmit an optical signal containing connectivity information for an optical fiber connected to the port of the optical transceiver via the optical fiber. The portable device () is configured to receive the optical signal transmitted via the optical fiber using the portable device video camera, and to display the connectivity information contained in the optical signal on the portable device optical display. Also disclosed are a controller () for an optical transceiver, a portable device (), and methods performed by a controller and a portable device.

Operation of an optical transceiver

An indicator system () for optical ports () of a passive optical communications equipment (). The indicator system comprises a plurality of photodetectors () configured to detect an optical signal on the optical ports and a plurality of () configured to indicate on which optical ports an optical signal is detected by the photodetector. The indicator system further comprises a power source () configured to provide power to the photodetectors () and indicators (). The power source is self-contained at the passive optical communications equipment. The power source () comprises a mechanical to electrical converter ().

Optical port identification

An optical node () for multiplexing optical signals is disclosed. The optical node () comprises an add port (), a common port (), an auxiliary port (), an optical transfer module (), and a reflecting element () coupled to the auxiliary port. The optical transfer module () is configured to couple a signal received on the add port () and matching an operational wavelength of the optical node () to the common port (), and to couple a signal received on the add port () and not matching an operational wavelength of the optical node () to the auxiliary port (). The reflecting element () is configured to reflect a signal received on the auxiliary port () to the add port (). Also disclosed are an optical transceiver and methods for operating and optical node and an optical transceiver.

Optical node and optical transceiver for auto tuning of operational wavelength

There is provided a security system for use at an enclosure containing one or more passive components of an optical communication link. The security system comprises a sensor configured to detect a physical breach of the enclosure, and an optical alert signal generator coupled to the optical communication link. The optical alert signal generator is self-powered, and configured to generate an optical alert signal and transmit the optical alert signal through the optical communication link when a physical breach of the enclosure is detected by the sensor. The optical alert signal is detectable at an entity external to the enclosure and connected to the optical communication link.

Security system

An add-drop network element () for an optical communications network. The add-drop network element comprises an optical amplifier () having an input port and an output port. The add-drop network element comprises also comprises an optical coupler () and an optical splitter (). The optical coupler () comprises an add input port, a through input port and an output port, the output port of the optical coupler () being connected to the input port of the optical amplifier. The optical splitter () comprising a drop output port, a through output port and an input port, the input port of the optical splitter () being connected to the output port of the optical amplifier.

Optical add-drop network element

A telecommunications apparatus including a lighting apparatus, the lighting apparatus having: a plurality of light sources, an illumination state of the light sources being controllable according to control signals; circuitry connected to the plurality of light sources, wherein the circuity is configured to provide control signals to the light sources; and a plug connected to the circuitry, wherein the plug is configured to connect to an external port of a first telecommunications device, and configured as an interface for control signals from the first telecommunications device to the circuitry. The plurality of light sources are arranged such that a change in illumination state of the plurality of light sources provides a visual indication on a subject telecommunications device. The telecommunications apparatus is configured to receive control signals from the first telecommunications device which correspond to an indication, by the plurality of light sources, relating to the subject telecommunications device.

Telecommunications apparatus and control method

A method of identifying a fault in an optical link comprises continually storing samples of a signal that represents a power of an optical signal received over the optical link. When a fault is detected on said optical link, at least one stored series of samples of the signal is retrieved. The method then comprises performing a classification on the retrieved series of samples, in order to classify the series of samples as resulting from one of a plurality of predefined faults.

Fault classification

A method of power control of an optical signal transmitted by a first network element. The first network element comprising a laser and a bandpass filter operating on the optical signal produced by said laser, whereas the method comprises receiving () information indicative of a power level of the optical signal transmitted by the first network element; and tuning () the laser output wavelength in response to said received information.

Method and apparatus for optical power control

The present disclosure relates to a method, apparatus and system for determining reliability information for a network component () of a telecommunications network. The disclosed method comprises: obtaining () a plurality of samples of an operating parameter of the network component () acquired over a period of time; determining () a value of an acceleration factor based on the plurality of samples, the acceleration factor corresponding to an effect of the operating parameter over time on the network component (); and determining () the reliability information based on the determined value of the acceleration factor.

Determining reliability information for a network component

A method of dispersion compensation for an optical link includes establishing communication using a first symbol rate over the optical link, determining a dispersion compensation for the optical link based on the communication at the first symbol rate, and establishing communication using a second symbol rate over the optical link using the determined dispersion compensation, wherein the second symbol rate is higher than the first symbol rate.

Dispersion compensation

In order to predict properties of a first device, data is obtained relating to properties of second devices having characteristics in common with the first device. The data comprises values of a first parameter at specific values of a second parameter. The data is organized in a first matrix with each row or column representing one value of the second parameter, and each column or row contains for one of the second devices the value of the first parameter at each of the values of the second parameter for which data is available. The first matrix is factorized into a second matrix and a third matrix. The second matrix represents a relationship between the second parameter and hidden features. The third matrix represents a relationship between the second devices and hidden features. The second matrix and/or the third matrix is used to predict at least one value of the first parameter and at least one respective specific value of the second parameter outside a predetermined range.

Prediction of device properties

A method of determining an end-to-end, E2E, service level for a communications network () by a network management entity (). The communications network () comprises one or more network domain. The method comprises obtaining () a first set of service level data for the one or more network domain. The first set of service level data for said one or more network domain comprises a summarized set of data derived from service level data monitored by said one or more network domain. The method further comprises determining () the end-to-end service level based on the obtained first set of service level data from the one or more network domain.

Determining a service level in a communication network

A method of managing a node in a cluster of nodes in an SDN network. The method comprising receiving from the node a request to join the cluster and a list of references authenticating the node. The references are verified and if the referenced passed the verification the node is allowed to join the cluster. Then a trust level of the node is calculated based on the number of verified references, wherein a role of the node in the cluster depends on the trust level of said node.

Method and apparatus for trust based authentication in SDN clustering

Optical protection switching apparatus (), for a single fibre bidirectional WDM optical ring, comprising: first () and second () ports for coupling to first and second adjacent portions of a single fibre bidirectional WDM optical ring; an optical splitter () comprising an input to receive a WDM aggregate optical signal, and first and second outputs coupled to the first and second ports; an optical switch () between the second output and the second port; and processing circuitry () to receive at least one of an indication of transmission continuity in the optical ring and an indication of transmission discontinuity in the optical ring, and to generate a switch control signal () comprising instructions to cause the optical switch to be open when there is transmission continuity in the optical ring and to cause the optical switch to be closed when there is transmission discontinuity in the optical ring.

Optical protection switching for single fibre bidirectional WDM optical ring

An optical device () for an optical network, comprising an optical input (), a passive optical component (), a memory device () for storing information relating to the passive optical component. The optical device further comprises an optical splitter () configured to power split off a portion of received optical signals to form split optical signals and to output the remaining optical power of received optical signals to the passive optical component and a photodetector () configured to receive the split optical signals and to generate a corresponding photodetector output signal. Further the optical device comprises an accumulator () configured to be charged by the photodetector output signal, a laser () configured to be powered by the accumulator and a controller () configured to, in response to a trigger from the photodetector, read said information from the memory device and to cause the laser to transmit an optical signal from an optical output (), the optical signal carrying a message based on said information read from the memory device.
