An electric cable includes a strain sensor longitudinally extending along the cable and including a strain optical fiber arranged within a bending neutral region surrounding and including a bending neutral longitudinal axis of the electric cable, and at least two longitudinal structural elements, at least one of the at least two longitudinal structural elements being a core including an electrical conductor, wherein the strain sensor is embedded in a strain-transferring filler mechanically coupling at least one of the at least two longitudinal structural elements with the strain sensor. With the disclosed cable construction, the strain experienced by the at least one of the at least two longitudinal structural elements is transferred to the strain sensor at least in a strained condition. In the preferred embodiments, the electric cable is a heavy-duty cable.

A method for monitoring the torsion of a cable includes the steps of: providing a cable having an outer surface and extending along a longitudinal direction, the cable being provided with at least one identification tag, preferably an RFID tag, arranged in a tag angular position in a cross-sectional plane taken transverse to the longitudinal direction, the at least one tag storing a tag identification code and being capable of transmitting a tag electromagnetic signal; interrogating the at least one identification tag to receive the tag electromagnetic signal, and detecting the tag electromagnetic signal, wherein the step of detecting the tag electromagnetic signal includes the step of reading the tag identification code and determining the tag angular position of the at least one identification tag. Monitoring method and system for detecting the torsion along a cable provided with identification tags

A system for monitoring a plurality of components distributed in different space locations, includes: at least one optical fiber path; an optical radiation source adapted to inject optical radiation into the at least one optical fiber path; at least one first and at least one second optical branches branching from the at least one optical fiber path and adapted to spill respective portions of the optical radiation, the first and second optical branches being adapted to be operatively associated with a respective component to be monitored. The first optical branch includes a first optical reflector and is adapted to reflect the spilled optical radiation portion unless the respective component at least partially breaks; the second optical branch includes at least one passive optical attenuator adapted to be operatively coupled to the respective component to be monitored, and having an attenuation capable of changing in response to a change in operating conditions of the respective monitored component when operatively coupled thereto, and a second optical reflector. An optical receiver is adapted to detect back-reflected optical radiation reflected by the first and second optical branches. The monitoring system is adapted to recognize a position of a component of the plurality of components based on a characteristic of the back-reflected optical radiation.

Method and system for fiber-optic monitoring of spatially distributed components

A system for monitoring ancillary elements of an electric power distribution network, includes an optical fiber path associated with the ancillary elements to be monitored, respective optical branches branching from the optical fiber path, wherein each optical branch includes at least one passive optical attenuator operatively coupled to, and having an attenuation adapted to change in response to a change in operating conditions of the respective ancillary element, and an optical reflector; an optical radiation source adapted to inject optical radiation into the optical fiber path; and an optical receiver adapted to detect back-reflected optical radiation reflected by the optical reflector; the monitoring system being further adapted to recognize a position of at least one of the ancillary elements based on a characteristic of the back-reflected optical radiation.

A method and system for transporting electric power in a link and for the analysis of the status of an electric power transmission link and the relevant current rating capability control. The method includes dividing the link into a predetermined number of segments, each segment having an associated prediction model and at least two associated temperature sensors. Upon receiving sensor values, an expected operating condition in one of the segments is determined based on the sensor value and the electric current value. Next, an actual operating condition in the segment is determined and compared with the expected operating condition. If there is a difference between the conditions, a second predetermined prediction model is associated with the segment.
