Methods and systems for ventilation management using lung ultrasound

The present disclosure pertains to a system for metabolic measurements, the system comprising: a metabolic monitor configured to determine first concentration measurements of O2 and CO2 in a portion of gas exhaled by a subject during one or more breaths; and determine a first rate of O2 consumption (VO2) and a first CO2 volume production (VCO2) of the subject during the one or more breaths based on the determined first O2 concentration and the determined first CO2 concentration; a CO2 monitor configured to determine second CO2 concentration measurements in the exhaled gas during the one or more breaths; and determine second CO2 volume production (VCO2) of the subject based on the measured second CO2 concentration; and processors configured to determine a correction factor based on the determined first VCO2 and the second VCO2; and determine a corrected first VO2 using the correction factor and the first VO2.

System and method for metabolic measurements

A computer-implemented method is described. The method includes receiving an indication and determining a subject's oxygen consumption based on the indication. The indication refers to an oxygen fraction in a sample of inhalation gas delivered by a ventilator for inhalation by a subject. The indication further refers to an oxygen fraction in a sample of exhalation gas exhaled by the subject. The indication further refers a measurement of a flow rate of the exhalation gas.

Oxygen consumption determination

A mechanical ventilator () is connected with a ventilated patient () to provide ventilation in accordance with ventilator settings of the mechanical ventilator. Physiological values (variables) are acquired for the ventilated patient using physiological sensors (). A ventilated patient cardiopulmonary (CP) model () is fitted to the acquired physiological variables values to generate a fitted ventilated patient CP model by fine-tuning its parameters (). Updated ventilator settings are determined by adjusting model ventilator settings of the fitted ventilated patient CP model to minimize a cost function (). The updated ventilator settings may be displayed on a display component () as recommended ventilator settings for the ventilated patient, or the ventilator settings of the mechanical ventilator may be automatically changed to the updated ventilator settings so as to automatically control the mechanical ventilator.
