The present provides aphenylalanine lyase polypeptide, polynucleotides that encode the polypeptide, and methods of obtaining and using these products. In particular the polypeptide can be employed for the production of phenylalanine, phenylalanine analogs, and optically active unnatural amino acids having phenylalanine-like structures.
