A process and multistation apparatus for injection blow molding a thermoplastic material to form a blow molded container having an integral injection molded handle is disclosed. The process and apparatus feature an injection mold which is closed to form an injection mold cavity with a contiguous injection mold handle cavity. A preform pin is inserted into the injection mold cavity through a preform carrier to form a preform recess into which hot thermoplastic is injected to form a hollow preform having a solid injection molded handle. After cooling the thermoplastic preform the preform pin is withdrawn and the molds are opened. The injection formed preform may be optionally heat treated prior to the preform being enclosed within a blow mold. The blow mold forms a cavity having the final desired container shape and a cavity into which the handle is enclosed. Blow air is introduced into the preform to inflate it to the shape of the blow mold cavity thereby forming a blow molded container having an injection molded handle attached thereto. A preform carrier may be used to carry the injection molded preform from the injection mold station to the blow mold station. The carrier attains attachment to the preform as the preform is formed in the injection mold.

Injection blow molding apparatus

A method and apparatus are disclosed for transferring blanks, plastic parisons or other articles to be molded in a sealed cavity. One embodiment includes mold sections which are closeable along a first axis to form a mold cavity and which are movable along a second axis from a first station where the mold sections may receive a moldable blank to a second station where the blank may be molded under pressure. Optional biasing means may be included to hold the mold sections sufficiently close together to hold the blank in the mold cavity as the mold sections move from the first station to the second station. A clamp, or other pressure applying means, exerts a final closing pressure on the mold sections at the second station for molding the blank under pressure. The clamp is stationary in relation to the first and second stations so that the mold sections can move relative to the clamp along the second axis.

Apparatus for transporting sectional molds

Blow molding apparatus for manufacturing containers, the apparatus having a blow station, a parison forming station to one side of the blow molding station, a container trim station at the other side of the blow molding station and a multiple station mold carrying slide for shuttle movement between a first position below the parison forming and blow molding stations and a second position below the blow molding and trim stations. The shuttling movement of the slide takes place between a pair of movable platens that are capable of opening and closing the molds. Improved structure in the apparatus insures that the blow heads will not separate from the molds during blowing, provides for trimming of the containers at the trim stations and for deposit of trimmed containers in upright positions on a conveyor.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for transferring blanks, plastic parisons or other articles to be molded in a sealed cavity. In another embodiment the method includes the steps of transporting mold sections generally along a first axis to a first station; moving the mold sections generally along a second axis while at the first station to close the molds around a blank sufficiently to encapsulate the blank in an interior cavity formed by the mold sections; transporting the blank in the mold cavity to a second station by moving the closed mold sections along said first axis; and exerting a force on the mold sections at the second station to form a proper seal for molding, the force being exerted from a source which is stationary in relation to the first and second stations.

Sections of a preform mold are then closed around the parison, the sections having a preform cavity with a configuration such that one end of the parison is open after closing and the other end is enclosed. A core pin is next inserted into the open end of the parison and is utilized to compression mold the parison to form a preform. Heat is transferred from the parison through the inner and outer walls of the preform between the mold cavity and core pin during the compression molding step in order to thermally condition the preform and bring the temperature within the desired range. The sections of the preform mold are then opened and the preform is enclosed within sections of blow molds within a blow mold cavity. The preform is next expanded to the shape of the blow mold cavity. This process may be continuously repeated by means of multifunction mold halves.

Method for forming a blown thermoplastic article

A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming thermoplastic articles in which preforms are injection molded interiorly of mold cavities around substantially cylindrical core pins on a rotatable turret. The turret is then indexed to displace the core pins to a second position and the preforms are retained on the core pins during indexing and thereafter to cool the preforms to a self sustaining condition. To enhance cooling, the preforms may be engaged by temperature conditioning molds while on the core pins. After adequate cooling, the preforms are removed from the core pins and positioned on carrier sleeves. The preforms are then thermally conditioned on the carrier sleeves to a predetermined temperature, following which they are blow molded in blow mold cavities.

Blow molding method

An improved hollow plastic container which is blow molded from an injection molded preform is disclosed. The container has an integral injection molded handle which handle is attached at only one point to the container. The injection molded handle is formed contemporaneously with the formation of the injection molded preform.

An injection blow molding machine for the production of thermoplastic containers is disclosed. The apparatus is a multistation apparatus with a preform being injection molded at one station, prior formed preforms being heat treated at optional heat treating stations and the heat treated preforms being blown at a blow mold station. An automatic removal station may be utilized subsequent to the blow mold station for removing the blown article from a carrying apparatus which is utilized to carry the preform from the injection station through the heat treatment stations to the blow mold stations and then to the optional removal stations.

The apparatus includes a gripping mechanism for gripping the article, means for moving the gripping mechanism to and from the article, means for arcuately moving the gripping mechanism and gripping actuator means to cause the gripping mechanism to grip and release the article when desired.
