A method and apparatus for implementing a remote mirroring data facility for a computer system comprising a central processing unit (CPU); a first storage system that is coupled to the CPU so that the CPU can store information in the first storage system; a second storage system coupled to the CPU via a communication link; and a mirroring controller to mirror at least some of the information stored in the first storage system in the second storage system by transferring the at least some of the information over the communication link. The communication link can be implemented via a network cloud, which may be the Internet or an intranet. Multiple pipes can be used to pass data through the network cloud in parallel. Alternatively, the communication link can be implemented using wireless technology.

Method and apparatus for implementing a remote mirroring data facility without employing a dedicated leased line to form the link between two remotely disposed storage devices

A method for use in a computer system including first and second computers and first and second storage systems, wherein the first storage system is coupled to the first computer to store data transferred from the first computer to the first storage system and the second storage system is coupled to the second computer to store data transferred from the second computer to the second storage system. The method is for updating data stored on at least one of the first and second storage systems, and includes updating a first logical volume of data stored on the first storage system with a first set of data transferred from the first computer to the first storage system; receiving, at the first storage system, a second set of data transmitted from the second storage system to the first storage system via at least one communication path that does not pass through the first computer; and updating the first logical volume of data with the second set of data transmitted from the second storage system.

Method and apparatus for maintaining coherence among copies of a database shared by multiple computers

A video file server includes an integrated cached disk array storage subsystem and a plurality of stream server computers linking the cached disk storage subsystem to the data network for the transfer of video data streams. The video file server further includes a controller server for applying an admission control policy to client requests and assigning stream servers to service the client requests. The stream servers include a real-time scheduler for scheduling isochronous tasks, and supports at least one industry standard network file access protocol and one file access protocol for continuous media file access. The cached disk storage subsystem is responsive to video prefetch commands, and the data specified for a prefetch command for a process are retained in an allocated portion of the cache memory from the time that the cached disk storage subsystem has responded to the prefetch command to the time that the cached disk storage subsystem responds to a fetch command specifying the data for the process. The time between prefetching and fetching is selected based on available disk and cache resources. The video file server provides video-on-demand service by maintaining and dynamically allocating sliding windows of video data in the random access memories of the stream server computers.

Prefetching to service multiple video streams from an integrated cached

A system and method for executing on board diagnostics in connection with automated test hardware and maintaining an event history on a circuit board having a microprocessor and diagnostic routines stored in read only memory (ROM). The testing of a circuit board by automated test equipment causes a microprocessor on the circuit board to execute the diagnostic routines stored in read only memory on the circuit board. Upon completion of the diagnostic routines, the results generated by the routines are stored in non-volatile memory (NVRAM) on the circuit board. Upon completion of the remaining circuit board testing, the results of that testing are also written to the non-volatile memory on the circuit board. Other events occurring during in the production and use of the circuit board may also be written to the non-volatile memory on the circuit board to maintain a log for diagnostic and statistical purposes.
