A lubricating oil composition, a method of reducing low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in a direct-injected spark-ignited internal combustion engine, and a use of a lubricant composition to reduce LSPI events in such an engine. Preferably, the composition comprises a detergent comprising an overbased calcium detergent having a total base number (TBN) of at least 150, wherein the lubricating oil composition has a calcium content of at least 0.08 wt. %, based on the weight of the lubricating oil composition, and wherein the lubricating oil composition has a silicon content of at least 12 ppm by weight, based on the weight of the lubricating oil composition.

Relating to lubricating compositions

A lubricating oil composition for reducing low-speed pre-ignition events or improving oxidation in a spark-ignited direct injection engine is disclosed. The composition includes a detergent additive which comprises either: an oil-soluble sulfonate including both magnesium and calcium as cations; or an oil-soluble salicylate including both magnesium and calcium as cations.

Lubricating oil composition

A low sulphated ash lubricating oil composition comprises an ashless aromatic amine antioxidant and an overbased magnesium detergent which exhibits improved thermal oxidation stability.

An internal-combustion engine lubricating oil composition has a P content of not greater than 0.09 mass %; a S content of not greater than 0.3 mass %; and a sulphated ash content of not greater than 1 mass %. It contains the following additives: as sole ashless, nitrogen-containing dispersant, and providing from 0.03 to 0.07 mass % of nitrogen in the lubricating oil composition, at least one ashless, nitrogen-containing derivative of a polyalkenyl-substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester, the polyalkenyl-substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester being made from a polyalkene exclusively by the thermal 'ene' reaction; as sole overbased metal detergent, at least one overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate; and at least one viscosity modifier.

An internal combustion engine crankcase lubricating oil composition has a phosphorus content of not greater than 0.08 mass % and a metal detergent additive system comprising a calcium salicylate and a magnesium salicylate and having a mass ratio of magnesium atoms to calcium atoms of greater than one.

Lubricating oil compositions

A lubricating oil composition for a heavy duty diesel engine comprises a base oil, at least 0.6 mass % of an ash-free antioxidant and an overbased magnesium-containing detergent. The detergent provides greater than 0.05 mass % Mg based on the mass of the composition. Bore polishing in the engine is reduced for a given level of exhaust gas ash production.

A low SAPS lubricating oil composition exhibiting excellent piston cleanliness having up to 0.3 wt. % sulfur, up to 0.08 wt. % phosphorus, and a sulfated ash content up to 0.80 wt. % comprising an overbased alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkyl salicylate detergent having a low soap content.

An oil-soluble hydrocarbyl phenol aldehyde condensate having the following structure: wherein n is 0 to 10, preferably 1 to 8, more preferably 2 to 6, and most preferably 3 to 5; Y is a divalent bridging group, and is preferably a hydrocarbyl group, preferably having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R is a hydrocarbyl group having from 4 to 30, preferably 8 to 18, and most preferably 9 to 15 carbon atoms. The oil-soluble hydrocarbyl phenol aldehyde condensate has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of 1250 to 1680, as measured by MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight) mass spectrometry.

Detergent additives for lubricating oil compositions

A multigrade crankcase lubricating oil composition comprising a mineral oil-based basestock of lubricating viscosity in a major amount and a non-hydrogenated olefin polymer in a minor amount. The lubricating oil composition also comprises a dispersant, a metal detergent, one or more other additives, and a viscosity modifier.

A lubricating oil composition of TBN 8-9 having up to 0.3 wt. % sulfur, up to 0.08 wt. % phosphorus, and a sulfated ash content up to 0.80 wt. %, comprising an overbased magnesium-containing lubricating oil detergent, and 2.5 to 4 wt. % of a nitrogen-containing ashless dispersant.

A process for forming an ene reaction product wherein an enophile, such as maleic anhydride, is reacted with reactive polyalkene having a terminal vinylidene content of at least 30 mol. %, at high temperature in the presence of a free radical inhibitor. The polyalkenyl acylating agents are useful per se as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels and also serve as intermediates in the preparation of other products (e.g., succinimides) useful as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels. The presence of the free radical inhibitor during the high temperature reaction results in a reaction product that is low, or substantially free from sediment.
