Optical reading system and methods having multiple modes of operation, for example: omnidirectional and single-code picking; fixed and handheld reading; 1D and 2D code reading. In one configuration, an image-based system obtains input data via an area sensor (e.g., a 2D CCD array) with only data corresponding to a pattern of virtual scan lines being stored and processed. A user may implement different operating modes such as a first mode reading codes in any location or orientation and a second mode reading only a code oriented along a particular virtual scan line or group thereof. Alternately, the data reader is operable to switch between handheld mode selecting a first pattern of virtual scan lines to process and/or decode and a fixed mode selecting a second pattern of virtual scan lines to process and/or decode. Virtual scan patterns in either mode can change within or between frames.

System and method of optical code reading

Disclosed are embodiments of methods, systems, and apparatus for providing virtual scan lines in an imaging system that compensate for the optical distortion associated with the system. In some embodiments, the virtual scan lines may be curved or angled according to their position in the Field of View (FOV) of the imaging system to compensate for the distortion. Some embodiments may provide for virtual scan lines that are preconfigured to compensate for a typical or pre-selected level and type of optical distortion. Other embodiments may be configured to measure or otherwise ascertain the actual distortion of the optical lens and/or other components of the system and generate a virtual scan line pattern that compensates for the measured distortion.

An integrated data reader and electronic article surveillance (EAS) system, and methods of operation. In one configuration, a data reader such as a bar code scanner is equipped with an EAS deactivation module disposed behind the scanner surface preferably downstream and/or upstream of the scanner window. The system may be configured such that the EAS deactivation module is interchangeable from the right side of the scanner housing (which is preferred for left-to-right scanning motion) to the left side of the scanner housing (which is preferred for right-to-left scanning motion). In other configurations, the deactivation module may be disposed in the housing adjacent to the window and oriented longitudinally and parallel to the sweep direction of the item. The EAS deactivation modules have various configurations such as simple planar coils, a magnetically active core with coil windings, or two part L-shape construction.

A micro-optical system with autofocus capability utilizing micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) to vary the focus of the beam achieving increased depth of field and improved poor quality reading. The disclosed micro-optical system includes a light source, a micro-optical element positioned adjacent the light source, a detector configured to provide detection information based at least in part on a location of an object, a processor configured to calculate and transmit, and an actuator configured to adjust the relative spacing of the micro-optical element and the light source based at least n part on the actuation information received. In another embodiment, end-user or OEM focus is disclosed wherein the scanner is varied by altering the focus parameters input by the user. In this embodiment, the focus parameters are dependent on the application for which the scanner is to be used. For example, the device may be configured to have a very small &ldquo;waist&rdquo; or &ldquo;spot&rdquo; to read extremely small barcodes for applications where space for barcode labels is limited or where barcodes are deliberately made unobtrusive. Similarly, a methods of use of the present invention are also disclosed.

Micro-optical system for an auto-focus scanner having an improved depth of field

An optical element has a coating thereon to reflect energy, such as light, of a first polarization into a first focus zone and to allow energy, such as light, of a second polarization orthogonal to the first polarization, to reach a second optical element. The second optical element, which may be reflective, diffractive, holographic, aspherical or have other optical characteristics, acts upon the energy to focus it into a second focus zone. A polarization changing element can be placed between the energy source and the optical element or the polarization can be changed by rotating the energy source. The ability to position energy into different focus zones allows for high speed processing and for the generation of useful beam patterns, such as aiming beams.

Polarization dependant multi-focus optical system

A scan assembly and method of manufacture in which the dither mechanism comprises a co-molded dither spring, dither mount and mirror mount. The method comprises co-molding a living hinge with a base mount on the fixed end of the living hinge and a mirror mount on the free end of the living hinge. The living hinge may be molded out of the same plastic material as the base mount and mirror mount, or the living hinge may be molded out of a more pliable plastic.

Scanner having co-molded dither spring assembly and method of constructing

A system for and a method of optical scanning which provide for converting between a multiple beam and a single beam optical scanner. In a preferred configuration, the scanner can be adapted to operate as either a single beam scanning system or a multiple beam scanning system. Light sources, mirrors, detectors, collection lenses, and other scanner components are added, removed, and/or replaced, thereby allowing the user to avoid having to purchase a new scanner when the user's performance requirements and/or cost restrictions vary.

System and method for converting multiple beam optical scanner

A method of and a system for generating a dense pattern of scan lines. In a preferred configuration, multiple laser beams are formed and directed along offset outgoing paths onto a scanning mechanism such as a polygon mirror which scans the beams across pattern mirrors to generate simultaneous scan patterns out into the scan volume. Return light from both scan patterns are retrodirectively collected and redirected by a common collection element such as a collection lens. The collection lens focuses return light from the first beam onto a first detector and light from the second beam onto a second detector, the first and second detectors being offset in corresponding fashion to the offset of the outgoing beams.

Multiple source/dense pattern optical scanner

An optical scanning system includes a laser pulser configured to output light at a predetermined duty cycle having an on time and an off time. The system also includes a receiver that receives light at the predetermined duty cycle, where the receiver includes an ambient light measuring and analyzing unit for analyzing received ambient light during the off time. The ambient light measuring and analyzing unit outputs a signal to the laser pulser that includes information as to characteristics of the received ambient light. The laser pulser operates at a modulating frequency that is separate from a frequency band of the received ambient light.
