Methods of processing a viscous ribbon include supplying a molten material from a supply vessel. Methods include forming the molten material into the viscous ribbon. The viscous ribbon travels along a travel path. Methods include receiving thermal light energy produced from the viscous ribbon. Methods include generating an image of the viscous ribbon from the thermal light energy. Methods include detecting a defect of the viscous ribbon from the image.

A method of measuring geometric parameters of through holes in a thin substrate includes acquiring images of select sub-volumes of the substrate using an optical system having a field of depth greater than a thickness of the substrate. The acquired images are processed to determine the desired geometric parameters.

Methods of validating edge strength of a glass sheet are provided. The glass sheet includes a first surface, a second surface opposing the first surface, a thickness defined between the first surface and the second surface, and at least one edge including an edge surface. The first surface and the second surface intersect the edge surface of the at least one edge. The methods include a step (I) of noncontactually thermally loading the glass sheet to subject at least a portion of the at least one edge to a tensile stress. The methods also include a step (II) of determining whether the at least one edge has an edge strength below a predetermined level by detecting whether a resulting strength imperfection has originated in the glass sheet due to the noncontactual thermal loading of step (I).

A container of an electrochemical double-layer capacitor for holding electrodes and electrolyte includes a housing having a cavity and a cap portion coupled to the housing forming a fluid-tight reservoir with the cavity. The container also includes a plurality of terminals incorporated into one or more of the housing or the cap portion, where the plurality of terminals adapted to be electrically coupled to the electrodes, and a pressure-compliant membrane incorporated into one of the housing or the cap portion. A pressure monitoring system that monitors the pressure inside the container includes a displacement measuring device adapted to measure a deflection of the pressure-compliant membrane.

Method to monitor safe operation of an ultracapacitor

A system and method are described herein for determining the quality of an optical material by measuring and analyzing birefringence (e.g., stress-induced birefringence, inherent birefringence) in the optical material (e.g., glass sheet). The method is a scanning technique in which a birefringence sensor is set to a first optical state and then moved in a direction at a constant velocity over a glass sheet while first power transmission measurements are made at a high data rate. At the end of this move, the birefringence sensor is set to a second optical state and then moved at the same velocity back over the glass sheet, while second power transmission measurements are made. This procedure is repeated the same number of times as there are optical states in the birefringence sensor. A computer then calculates birefringence values using profiles of the power transmission measurements so as to determine the quality of the glass sheet.
