A pond pump having a housing ( ) enclosing a synchronous motor ( ) with a drive shaft ( ) on which an impeller ( ) is loosely fitted so that, on start up, the shaft ( ) can rotate relative to the impeller ( ) until a pair of diametrically opposed keyways ( ) on the shaft engage and entrain keyways ( ) on the impeller ( ) to rotate it continuously in one direction. If the drive shaft initially rotates in the opposite direction, pegs ( ) on the rear face of the impeller ( ) engage with a detent ( ) located behind the impeller ( ) to stop said rotation until the motor ( ) restarts and rotates the drive shaft ( ) in said first direction.
