The invention relates to a coated article comprising a substrate coated with a tungsten carbide-cobalt layer having a strain-to-fracture greater than 4.3.times.10.sup.-3 inch per inch and a Vickers hardness of greater than about 875 HV.sub.0.3.

The invention is to friction rolls for working elongate members, e.g., webs or strands, such as crimper rolls, draw rolls, yarn package drive rolls comprising a roll having a generally cylindrical external surface and a ceramic, e.g., alumina, mixtures of alumina and titania, chromia, zirconia, or metallic carbide, e.g., tungsten carbide, coating bonded to the external surface, the coating being laser-engraved, that is, having a plurality of laser-formed depressions having a pattern covering substantially the entire exterior working surface of the roll and providing a uniform, wear-resistant surface texture over substantially the entire working surface.

Novel wear-resistant laser-engraved ceramic or metallic carbide surfaces

A reactor system for production of hydrogen by use of a hydride bed acting upon dissociated ammonia is formed of coaxial annular shells. A central one of the shells includes a hydride bed composed of pelletized material supported on a screen. Inner and outer shells contiguous to the central shell conduct fluid for heat exchange with the hydride bed. Inner and outer diameter of the central shell differ in length by an amount inversely proportional to the square root of the heat adsorption characteristic of the hydride.

A novel AC superconducting article comprising a composite structure having a superconducting surface along with a high thermally conductive material wherein the superconducting surface has the desired physical properties, geometrical shape and surface finish produced by the steps of depositing a superconducting layer upon a substrate having a predetermined surface finish and shape which conforms to that of the desired superconducting article, depositing a supporting layer of material on the superconducting layer and removing the substrate, the surface of the superconductor being a replica of the substrate surface.
