A combined blade guide and exchange tool, include a blade guide tool having a lower end and an upper end and a plurality of frame rails supporting a pair of lower collet housings at a lower end of the blade guide tool. A pair of fuel support grapple actuating rods are supported between the plurality of frame rails and have a first end engaging a pair of collets within the pair of lower collet housings and a second end disposed at the upper end of the blade guide tool. A blade exchange tool is releasably mounted to the upper end of the blade guide tool and includes a pair of upper collets for engaging the pair of fuel support grapple actuating rods. The blade exchange tool further including a slider and hook assembly attached to a cable guided by the blade exchange tool and adapted for engaging a control rod.

Boiling water reactor blade guide and exchange tool

A method and apparatus for grasping and lifting a boiling water reactor (BWR) control rod using a grapple. The grapple may grasp the control rod blade, the fuel support casting and the control rod guide tube of the control rod, to lift and move all three of these components in unison. The grapple includes a frame, a control rod blade hook, a fuel support casting hook(s) and a control rod guide tube hook(s). The control rod guide tube hook(s) may have a distal end that extends through a side flow orifice of a fuel support casting and beyond the confines of a control rod guide tube flow orifice to grasp the control rod guide tube. The distal end of the control rod guide tube hook(s) may include inner and outer landing surfaces, providing respective support for the fuel support casting and control rod guide tube.

Method and apparatus for a BWR control rod handling grapple

Disclosed is an unlatching tool that may be used to unlatch a control rod from a control drive. The unlatching tool may include a baseplate, a first guide member and a second guide member attached to the baseplate, a first frame and a second frame attached to the baseplate, a stepper motor attached to the first frame, a worm drive attached to the first frame, a cable reel shaft attached to the first and second frame, a hose wrapped around the cable reel shaft, and a hook attached to a first end of the hose. The hook may include a cylindrical sleeve having a at least one finger configured to fold and unfold. Disclosed also is a method of unlatching a control rod from a control drive.

The system includes a tubular female end portion of the first pole section and a male end portion of the second pole section that is insertable into the female end portion. The system additionally includes a locking nut threadingly engaged with the male end portion that is rotatable on the male end portion to longitudinally transition the locking nut into contact with the female end portion to fixedly interlock the male and female end portions. Furthermore, the system includes a biased locking sleeve assembly slidably and rotatably mounted on a locking assembly portion of the second pole. The locking sleeve assembly can include a locking sleeve and a biased plunger slidingly positioned within an interior of the locking sleeve for applying a locking force to the locking nut.

A tool for vertically supporting a shroud repair tie rod assembly having a clevis hook by bracing the clevis hook against a clevis pin incorporated on a lower support fixture toggle-bolted to the shroud support plate. The provision of vertical support at the bottom of the tie rod assembly allows the vertical support at the top of the tie rod assembly to be removed, so that the upper support structure can be coupled to the threaded upper end of the tie rod. The lower end of the tie rod assembly is supported on both sides of a vertical support plate of the fixture. The tool for vertically supporting the lower end of the tie rod assembly comprises a support frame which sits on the top surface of a fixture bracket while receiving the coupled toggle bolt and nut in a recess that allows the tool to rotate about the axis of the toggle bolt. The vertical support tool includes a pivotable locking arm with a channel for receiving a rope, by means of which the tool can be raised and lowered by maintenance personnel standing on the refueling bridge. A threaded hydraulic cylinder is installed in the support frame so that its piston lies directly underneath a bottom surface of one arm of the clevis hook and extends vertically upward in response to cylinder actuation. In the extended position, the distal end of the piston bears against the bottom surface of the clevis hook with sufficient force to vertically support the tie rod assembly against the clevis pin.

Tool for vertically supporting tie rod assembly on lower support fixture

A tool set and a method of using those tools in combination is disclosed that are especially well adapted to the function of rearranging and/or replacing the control rods and fuel supports in a boiling water reactor. The tool set includes a grapple that is capable of simultaneously picking up both a control rod and its associated fuel support. A separate unlatching tool is provided for pulling the control rod's release handle in order to decouple the control rod from a control rod drive. A storage rack that may be mounted in the reactor pressure vessel is provided for storing a fuel support and a pair of control rods when the positions of selected control rods are being shifted about the reactor core area. In the method aspect of the invention, the unlatching tool is used to pull the control rod's release handle. Thereafter, the grapple lifts the control rod and its associated fuel support as a unit. When rearranging the positions of the control rods, a first control rod and its associated fuel support are placed the storage rack. Then a second control rod/fuel support assembly is removed in a similar manner and the second control rod is placed in the storage rack. Thereafter, the first control rod may be removed from the storage rack and placed in the position formally occupied by the second control rod with the same fuel support that was removed from the second location.

Tool for unlatching control rod without removing fuel support

A method and an apparatus for repairing a shroud in which the top guide support ring has been subjected to stress corrosion cracking. The method involves the placement of a plurality of clamps around the outer circumference of the shroud at a plurality of azimuthal positions between jet pump assemblies. The clamps structurally replace the welds that join the top guide support ring to the upper and lower shroud walls. The shroud repair clamps support the top guide, the fuel bundle assemblies and the shroud head. The shroud repair clamps are bolted to the shroud above and below the top guide support ring in a manner which will prevent relative movement across the top guide support ring welds during all normal and upset conditions.
