A method for configuring telemetry transmission includes receiving a transmitted telemetry signal at the earth's surface. The received signal is selected and processed to compute a measured power spectral density (PSD). A theoretical PSD is computed of the transmitted signal at the known carrier frequency and processed in combination with the measured PSD to compute an attenuation factor of the transmitted signal at a plurality of frequencies.

Automated configuration of telemetry transmission

Communication between the surface and a downhole location, such as a bottomhole assembly and/or an RSS is performed by electromagnetic downlink. Electromagnetic signals are transmitted from the surface through the formation at a frequency of 8 Hz or greater. Electromagnetic signals are transmitted and received while drilling or during drilling activities. In this manner, information and instructions may be transmitted to the BHA while drilling.

A method includes receiving a signal having a telemetry portion and a noise portion. The method may also include identifying one or more harmonic frequencies in the signal. The method may also include determining whether the one or more harmonic frequencies are in a predetermined frequency band. The method may also include determining whether a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the signal is below a predetermined SNR threshold. The method may also include generating one or more notifications in response to the determination whether the one or more harmonic frequencies are in the predetermined frequency band and the determination whether the SNR is below the predetermined SNR threshold.

The present disclosure describes methods and systems that can be used for controlling and coordinating the transmission of electromagnetic telemetry signals from and/or to a plurality of downhole tools to minimize or reduce electromagnetic interference between the transmissions. Signal coordination control is also disclosed that allows for duplex bidirectional communication of transmissions of electromagnetic telemetry signals such that electromagnetic interference between the transmissions is minimized or reduced.

A method for configuring transmission signals is disclosed. The method includes receiving a signal from a downhole tool in a wellbore. The signal may include a telemetry portion and a noise portion. The method also includes reproducing the telemetry portion based at least partially on the signal. Further, the method includes subtracting the telemetry portion from the signal. The method includes estimating, based at least partially on the subtraction, the noise portion of the signal. The method also includes altering a transmission configuration of the downhole tool based at least partially on the noise portion of the signal.

Methods and systems for spectrum estimation for measure while drilling telemetry in a well system

A method for recovering data from a downhole tool in a wellbore includes measuring an electromagnetic signal using first and second sensors. At least a portion of the electromagnetic signal is transmitted by a downhole tool positioned in a first wellbore. The first and second sensors are each positioned at a different location along a length of a second wellbore. The electromagnetic signal measured by the first and second sensors is decoded to recover a property measured by the downhole tool.

Methods and related apparatus pertaining to downhole and surface telemetry, such as a method in which a telemetry system is provided with a communication path formed with an electrically conductive transport medium coupled across a plurality of downhole nodes. Such method includes operating on the communication path with a multi-drop system that provides telemetry to the downhole nodes in a wellbore, including employing modulation in a master-slave arrangement using binary differential phase shift keying or differential quadrature phase shift keying.

A technique for communicating data within a wellbore is provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving digital data and encoding the digital data into symbols each representative of one or more data bits of the digital data. In this embodiment, the method also includes modulating the phase of an acoustic wave within the wellbore to represent the plurality of symbols, wherein modulating the phase of an acoustic wave includes changing the phase of the acoustic wave such that the acoustic wave includes smooth phase transitions between successive phases representative of the plurality of symbols.
