A multi-stage vacuum pump, expander, or compressor, that incorporates one or more stages of a fixed scroll(s) and orbiting scroll(s) that operates simultaneously. The motor drives the orbiting scroll(s) within the structure, and the various fixed and orbiting scrolls are arranged for either parallel generation of a vacuum or high pressure gas, or arranged in series for generating of a significantly high vacuum or gaseous pressure, or a combination of parallel arranged and series arranged fixed and orbiting scrolls may be embodied within the structure, operated by a single motor means, in order to attain the high efficiencies of operation as a vacuum pump, or a gaseous compressor, during its functioning. The various combinations of orbiting and fixed scrolls, when arranged as aforesaid, can be reduced in size, or miniaturized, and used in conjunction with small appliances, or even in hand-held instruments, as for example, for use in conducting mass spectrometry, or for other purposes. The actual structure of the multi-stage devices can include the fixed and orbiting scrolls adjacent the motor, or the singular motor may be located intermediate various stages of the formed vacuum pump/compressor, in its assembly.

A compact energy cycle construction that utilizes a working fluid in its operation is disclosed having a compact housing of a generally cylindrical form, an orbiting scroll type expander, a central shaft which is driven by the expander, a generator having a rotor and a stator with the central shaft being mounted to the rotor for rotating the rotor relative to the stator, a pump mounted to the central shaft, an evaporator positioned between the expander and the generator and surrounding the central shaft, and the orbiting scroll type expander, the central shaft, the generator, the pump, and the evaporator being housed within the compact housing to form an integrated system operable in accordance with an energy cycle.

Multi stage scroll vacuum pumps and related scroll devices

A three stage vacuum pump has three stages of fixed scrolls and orbiting scrolls that operate simultaneously. A motor drives the second orbiting scroll within the third fixed scroll upon three equally spaced idlers. One idler then transmits rotation and torque into the second stage. The second orbiting scroll has involutes upon both surfaces to engage the second fixed scroll inwardly and the first fixed scroll outwardly. The first fixed scroll has fins upon its back that extend into the atmosphere to transfer heat to air cool the pump. This pump also has a fan accelerating heat transfer. The pump operates the scrolls directly from a motor or from a motor and magnetic coupling so that the atmosphere does not infiltrate the pump.

Three stage scroll vacuum pump

A scroll type device for operating on a fluid provided thereto that includes, as a unit, a housing with two interleaved scroll plates that are installed within such housing and that are operably movable relative to one another in an eccentric orbit, with such scroll plates including interleaved spiral projections, spiral projections include first and second portions, which portions will operate for expansion and the other of which portion will operate for compression as the unit operates in a given normal direction of movement.

This gas equipment, for other than air, includes a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll, each having fins upon their back surfaces. The orbiting scroll remains within a housing having fins that engage with the fins on the orbiting scroll. The internal fins of the housing transfer heat from the orbiting scroll to the housing for air cooling by the atmosphere. The spiral arranged fins pump working fluid within the housing to increase heat transfer. The housing may also have an exterior fan. The orbiting scroll receives torque and rotation from a magnetic coupling or magnetic face seal, without a physical connection to a motor, so that the atmosphere does not infiltrate inside the housing. The present invention also has an enclosed inlet plenum to prevent infiltration of the atmosphere into the working fluid.

The pump operates the scrolls directly from a motor or from a motor and magnetic coupling so that the atmosphere does not infiltrate the pump.

Modifications of a scroll compressor provide a bellows suitable for liquid cooling and a plunger actuated seal for the scroll tips of various equipment. A bellows spans the fixed and the orbiting scrolls and hermetically seals the scroll device. Using two bellows, the present invention allows for liquid cooling of a compressor with an inlet and an outlet to exhaust heated coolant to a heat exchanger. Then the scrolls have a spiral upon a plate that ends in a tip. A seal upon the tip that abuts the fixed scroll upon a biased plunger modifies existing scroll designs to maintain the seal in contact with the fixed scroll. The modifications also provide an improved coating that seals the fixed and orbiting scrolls to each other without the use of epoxy, disassembly, and cleaning.

Advanced scroll compressor, vacuum pump, and expander

A scroll compressor having improved efficiencies includes a fixed plate having a spiral involute and an orbiting plate having a spiral involute wrap. The fixed and orbiting plates are positioned in a housing such that the spiral involute wraps mesh with each other to define chambers. A sealant being applied to tips and sides of said involute wraps, said sealant substantially is closing any gaps between the tip of the involute wrap and the plate opposing the involute wrap. The sealant is chosen from the group consisting essentially of a grease, a dampening gel, and an epoxy. If a grease is used, then the grease is preferably a low vapor pressure grease. During assembly of the scroll compressor, the sealant is applied to tips and sides of the involute wraps. After the scroll compressor has been assembled, it is run to purge excess sealant, leaving sealant only in the gaps between the two scrolls. If an epoxy is used as a sealant, and the epoxy requires curing, the scroll compressor is disassembled after the initial run and the epoxy is cured. The scroll compressor is then reassembled.

Scroll vacuum pump with improved performance

A scroll vacuum pump includes a first stage having a first stage fixed plate with a spiral involute, a second stage having a second stage fixed plate with a spiral involute wrap, and an orbiting plate having upper and lower surfaces. An involute spiral extends from the orbiting plate bottom surface to define a first stage orbiting plate and a second involute spiral extends from the orbiting plate top surface to define a second stage orbiting plate. The first stage involute wraps are taller than the second stage involute wraps. Gas is expanded in the first stage and compressed in the second stage. The first stage has an expansion ratio greater than or equal to one and the second stage has a compression ratio greater than or equal to one. However, that the pressure at the second stage exit is less than the pressure at the first stage inlet. To increase the efficiency of the pump, the tip seals of the involute spirals are extended as close as possible to the center of the involute to delay porting of gas by 180&deg; of rotation.

Two stage scroll vacuum pump with improved pressure ratio and performance

A scroll compressor is provided with idler shafts and scroll assemblies, both of which are two-piece assemblies. The two pieces of the idler shaft are made independently of each other and each includes an axis of symmetry which facilitates forming, or partial forming, of the parts on a lathe. The two parts, each of which includes a shaft, are then joined together with the shafts offset from each other to form the proper eccentricity in the idler shaft. The scroll assemblies are made by first forming a base plate for the desired scroll and then forming an eccentric groove in the base plate. An involute, which is formed to correspond to the groove is inserted in the base plate groove. The involute has grooves on both of its end surfaces to allow the same involute to be used for both the fixed and orbiting scroll plate.
