An ablation catheter is equipped with an irrigated tip electrode that can stimulate tissue in, e.g., a renal artery to help identify the location of a renal nerve. High-frequency stimulation of the renal nerve causes a decrease in the blood pressure of the patient thereby indicating that a renal nerve is nearby. The ablation catheter is used to ablate the renal nerve using radiofrequency, ultrasound, microwave energy or cryogenic cooling. Irrigation from the irrigated tip electrode may be used to decrease damage to cells in the wall of the lumen of the renal artery other than the renal nerve, such as the endothelial cells. In order to treat atrial fibrillation an ablation catheter would be used to isolate one or more pulmonary veins.

Treatment of atrial fibrillation using high-frequency pacing and ablation of renal nerves

A method for the treatment of a patient for the purpose of lowering blood pressure and/or treating cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation includes the insertion of an ablation catheter into the lumen of a renal artery. The ablation catheter is equipped with an electrode that can stimulate the wall tissue in the renal artery to help identify the location of a renal nerve. High-frequency stimulation of the renal nerve causes a decrease in the blood pressure of the patient thereby indicating that a renal nerve is nearby. The ablation catheter is used to ablate the renal nerve using radiofrequency, ultrasound, microwave energy or cryogenic cooling. An irrigated ablation catheter may be used to decrease damage to cells in the wall of the lumen of the renal artery other than the renal nerve, such as the endothelial cells.

A catheter includes an elongated body, a distal assembly with a shape-memory member defining a generally helical form, and a control handle. The control handle may be adapted to actuate a deflection puller wire for deflecting a portion of the elongated body and a contraction wire for contracting the generally helical form. The generally helical form carries irrigated ablation ring electrodes. A nitinol support member with shape memory extends through the distal assembly and into the elongated body to provide the helical form. The support member may have a varying stiffness along its length, for example, a decreasing stiffness toward a distal end of the support member. The support member can also be hollow so that it can receive a mandrel whose stiffness is greater than that of the support member.

A method for ablating tissue in or around the heart to create an enhanced lesion is provided. The distal end of a catheter including a needle electrode at its distal end is introduced into the heart. The distal end of the needle electrode is introduced into the tissue. An electrically-conductive fluid is infused through the needle electrode and into the tissue. The tissue is ablated after and/or during introduction of the fluid into the tissue. The fluid conducts ablation energy within the tissue to create a larger lesion than would be created without the introduction of the fluid.

Method for ablating with needle electrode

A circumferential ablation catheter is provided, which is particularly useful for treating atrial arrhythmia by ablating a substantial portion of a circumferential region of tissue in a tubular region of or near the heart of a patient. The catheter comprises an elongated tubular catheter body having an outer wall, proximal and distal ends, and at least one lumen extending therethrough. An ablation assembly is mounted at the distal end of the catheter body. The ablation assembly comprises a circumferential ablation element mounted on the distal end of the catheter body, and an inflatable balloon provided in surrounding relation to the circumferential ablation element. The inflatable balloon is adjustable between a radially collapsed position and a radially expanded position. The catheter further comprises a stabilization assembly mounted on the catheter distal to the ablation assembly. The stabilization assembly is designed to contact a plurality of points about an inner circumference of the generally tubular region of or near the heart, and thus serves to stabilize the distal end of the catheter during ablation. The stabilization preferably includes one or more electrodes that can be used for mapping, recording and/or ablating the inner circumference of the generally tubular region of or near the heart.
