A method of dispensing a fluid comprises providing a container made from flexible material and having an outer surface, a first opening and an interior fluid storage region therein. The method further comprises providing a volume of fluid within interior fluid storage region and providing a flexible metering housing, having a metering chamber therein with a predetermined volume, disposed in fluid communication with interior fluid storage region. The method further comprises providing an intake valve disposed between container and flexible metering housing permitting unidirectional fluid flow from interior fluid storage region into metering chamber. The method further comprises providing an exit port in fluid communication with container with an output valve disposed between exit port and metering chamber, depressing and releasing flexible metering housing, and filling the metering chamber with a volume of fluid by vacuum force in an amount by the volume of the metering chamber.

A method for welding material including: applying a release material to a first film, the release material applied to locations where a weld is not desired; positioning a second film opposite the first film, the release material being positioned between the first film and the second film; placing the first film and the second film between planar press plates having planar surfaces and closing the press plates on the first film and the second film; applying energy to at least one of the press plates to weld the first film to the second film where the release material is absent.

Apparatus for altering the body temperature of a patient comprises an enclosure defining an interior space for receiving at least a portion of a patient's body therein. The enclosure has at least one gusset that is resiliently deformable for accommodating patients of various sizes. A supply conduit fluidly connects an inlet of the enclosure to a reservoir, and a return conduit fluidly connects an outlet of the enclosure to the reservoir. A first coupler joins the supply conduit and the return conduit to the reservoir and a second coupler joins the supply conduit and the return conduit to the enclosure. The reservoir generally comprises a bag and at least a portion of the supply conduit is integral with the bag.

Apparatus for altering the body temperature of a patient

The fluid dispensing device () includes a container () with an interior fluid storage region () therein. A flexible metering housing () is disposed in fluid communication with the fluid storage region () a first one-way valve () disposed between the container () and the flexible metering housing (). One way flow from the interior fluid storage region () of the container () fills the predetermined volume of the metering chamber () with fluid by vacuum action when a button () is depressed and then released. A second valve () is in fluid communication with the metering housing () and permits one-way fluid flow from the metering chamber () to the exterior outer region of the container () when the metering housing () is depressed again. Each time the metering housing () is depressed a substantially equal volume of fluid () is dispensed from the container (). An additional foam layer () on the outside of container () facilitates dispersion and delivery of the fluid ().

Inflatable manometers

A manually operated pump having a pump assembly and a check valve. The pump assembly includes a dome with a fluid inlet. A support plate is sealed to the dome to define a fluid chamber. The support plate includes a fluid outlet. A foam material is positioned in the fluid chamber, the foam material expanding the dome to a rest state upon release of external pressure on the dome. The check valve has a valve inlet in fluid communication with the fluid outlet of the support plate. The check valve is positioned outside of the fluid chamber. The check valve has at least one exhaust channel to provide one way fluid flow from the fluid chamber through the exhaust channel.

An inflatable cushion is disclosed, having features that allow deflation of the cushion to be controlled. The cushion includes an inflatable bladder having a support therein and a valved exhaust tube in fluid communication therewith. An indicator coupled to the exhaust tube indicates when fluid is exiting the exhaust tube. When sat upon, the cushion deflates only by a preselected amount. This allows the cushion to be consistently and easily deflated to a predetermined inflation height.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a dual speed air control valve including a first sheet having an aperture therein and a second sheet continuously secured to the first sheet along a periphery of the first and second sheets. Further, a third sheet in continuously secured to the second sheet along a periphery of the third and second sheets. The first sheet defines at least one aperture in fluid communication with the third sheet. The third sheet defines at least one aperture in fluid communication with the first sheet.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a flow control valve including a first sheet having a hole therein and a second sheet secured to said first sheet at a plurality of separate seal locations along a periphery of the first and second sheets. The seal locations define at least one channel between the seal locations. The second sheet has an aperture therein in fluid communication with the hole and selectively in fluid communication with the channel.

An inflatable lumbar support system that includes a plurality of thermoplastic layers sealed together to form at least two laterally spaced bladders. A resiliently flexible face panel is disposed between the back of the user and the inflatable chambers. The panel is composed of form stable outer portions overlying the laterally spaced bladders and a medial portion therebetween of substantially greater yieldability than the outer portions of the panel. The inflatable lumbar support system is incorporated within a chair having a one-piece shell with a backrest that is cantilevered from the top of the backrest. The lumbar support system is carried by a mounting plate that includes a pair of mounting hooks that attach to and can slide vertically along the side edge of the cantilevered portion of the backrest. The lumbar support system can be slid vertically along the cantilevered backrest and can be inflated and deflated by a person setting in the chair.

A cushion or pad for orthopedic applications is disclosed. The cushion or pad comprises a bladder filled with a combination of spherical objects in a lubricant and an inflatable air bladder. The inflation of the air bladder is used to properly position an orthesis on a patient.
