A linear air diffuser is provided with one discharge opening regulated by a single, longitudinally pivotable blade and a thermally powered, self-contained control mechanism to preferentially orient the blade in response to changes in supply air and/or room air temperature. The diffuser maintains room air temperature at a desired level by varying the size of the discharge opening of the diffuser, thereby effecting a change in the volume of the supply air delivered to the room. In addition, the discharge opening and blade are designed so the cool supply air is discharged horizontally along the ceiling, and warm supply air is discharged vertically downward into the room.

Bi-directional air diffuser

A room air diffuser control mechanism is provided which is operated by two thermally powered thermostatic actuator elements, one reacting to the room air temperature, and the other reacting to the supply air temperature. When the supply air temperature is cool (e.g., less than 68.degree. F.), the supply air element is retracted and its linkage system is rendered inoperative. The room air element, through its linkage system, reacts to control the room temperature by varying the area of an air diffusion discharge opening. When the supply air temperature is warm (e.g., greater than 78.degree. F.), the supply air element reacts to disengage the room air element linkage system, and to move the air diffusion discharge opening to an adjustable, predetermined position. In this mode, the room air element does not affect the discharge opening regardless of the temperature of the room air.

Thermally-powered control mechanism

A diffuser for a conditioned air system for buildings incorporates a self contained and integrated sensor actuator for varying the volume flow of conditioned air through the diffuser in response to changes in room air temperature. The sensor actuator structure for sensing the room air temperature and for modulating the conditioned air flow is entirely contained within the diffuser structure and is powered directly by the changes in room air temperature without auxiliary equipment or power systems. The self contained diffuser is fully adaptable to existing systems to provide either or both modulated cooling and modulated heating and also to supply modulated cooling with the capability of morning warm-up. The diffuser is constructed to direct the air flow from the periphery of the diffuser and into the room at an angle and with a velocity which causes the air flow to have preferred aerodynamic characteristics so as to hug the ceiling and to avoid dumping.

Thermally actuated diffuser

A unit for measurement of the velocity of air flowing into or out of an opening such as the heating or air conditioning register or grill. An open end of a collecting section is placed over the opening and the air flows through a measuring section at the opposite end of the chamber. The measuring section includes a pair of hollow manifold tubes each having a smaller diameter, hollow sensing tube mounted coaxially therein. Air flows into a plurality of probes communicating with the interior of one manifold tube, into the associated sensing tube, through a velocity meter, through the other sensing tube into the other manifold tube, and out through a second plurality of probes also positioned at the opposite end of the collecting section. An orifice or constriction in the line leading to the flow meter inlet controls the flow and allows for full scale deflection of the meter within a selected range to permit accurate calibration.
