For the measurement of the temperature of a body (e.g. a melt) whose temperature is such that radiation is emitted from the body surface, a camera sighted on the body surface produces a real image from a selected area of which electronic signals are derived representative of the magnitude of a plurality (preferably three) of color components of radiation. These derived signals are subsequently processed to provide a measure of body temperature.

Methods of measuring temperature and apparatus for use therewith

A method of monitoring the degree of exposure of an electric arc within a furnace having a molten charge, e.g. an arc furnace or ladle furnace, in which characteristic frequency spectra of the waveforms from the supply associated with (a) arc-exposure and (b) arc-submersion are predetermined and in which signals (e.g. indicative of the arc current) emitted during operation are measured and processed and a comparison effected with a set level established from these characteristic signals whereby to provide an indication of the degree of arc exposure. The predetermined characteristic frequency spectra selected may be the harmonic content of the arc current.

Arc exposure monitor

This invention concerns apparatus for selectively connecting an electrode of an electric arc furnace to a source of cooling fluid. The apparatus includes a coupling having passageways extending therethrough for the flow of cooling fluid and comprises at least two separable sections, one such section being connected to receive cooling fluid from the source and the other to convey such cooling fluid to the electrode when coupled to the said one section. Guide means are provided to guide one separable section into close proximity to the other section and to clamp the assembled sections together to connect the electrode to the source of cooling fluid.

Electric arc furnaces

This invention relates to a water-cooled arc furnace electrode comprising a double-walled tubular metal column the two walls being electrically insulated from one another and defining an annular channel between them. The inner wall is electrically connected to a conductive screw-threaded member from which graphite sections depend, and this inner tube defines a central channel constituting a water flow path connected in series with the annular channel via a 'spider' in the aforesaid member. In accordance with this design the volume of water contained within the electrode column approaches the maximum, ensuring adequate cooling during electrode changes which hitherto has presented problems in other designs of this component.

Electric arc furnace electrodes

An electrode for an arc furnace comprising a water-cooled tubular column (2) and dependent therefrom a number of interconnected graphite or carbon sections, the column surrounding and being electrically insulated from one or more bus bars (5,6) extending centrally through the column and connected to a conductive screw-threaded member (7) at one end thereof, one of the graphite sections (13) being secured to the member, and that section, together with the other(s), being secured to one another through graphite nipples (15) having screw-threads of the same size as that of the said member.
