The invention provides an apparatus and method to confirm or deny the presence of an object within the scan area of an ultrasonic sensing system by requiring that any object be identified on at least two consecutive scans of the sensing system and using scan energy patterns which occur at irregular repetition times to selectively reject spurious direct or reflected signals present in the area. A generator of predetermined pattern burst of ultrasonic energy is arranged to produce one such burst of ultrasonic energy and a timing signal is coupled thereto so as to apply timing signals to cause production of the bursts. The timing signal source produces timing signals only according to a varying pattern whereby separation between adjacent signals meet certain present parameters. The energy patterns are applied to a transmitter which applies them to a scan area whereby the echo or returned energy from an object in the scan area is received and stored. The return from the next sequential burst is also stored and compared to the first. If the two agree the presence of the object is confirmed. If the two do not agree, then the contents of storage one is destroyed and the storage used to store the next sequential burst is compared. Failure to confirm means that an object was not present or that the object moved out of the scan area before its presence could be confirmed or a false signal was present, or one of a number of reasons, but no object is present.

Interference avoidance device for use in a sensor system

A fail-safe sensor system to provide a positive indication of the proper operation of a sensor system by accounting for the return signals from an active zone and a monitor zone beyond. Search signals, provided by a transducer operating in the transmit mode, are transmitted within an active zone within which objects to be detected are expected to be located. Unreturned search signals are permitted to travel beyond the active zone into a monitor zone beyond and objects in such monitor zone cause return signals which are also employed. A counter feed from a free running clock source is permitted to run up a count whose predetermined limit represents the estimated maximum time period during which a sensor system should operate without contacting an object. Return signals, whether from objects in the active zone or the monitor zone, reset the counter back to zero. The absence of a return signal permits the counter to exceed its predetermined limit and produce an output signal which can be directed to control circuitry, an alarm or logic circuitry to determine if the system is operative.

Fail-safe sensor system

A selector switch of the type having a thumbwheel selector journalled for rotation in a frame for selecting any one of a plurality of interconnections among external circuits to be connected to electrical contacts mounted in the frame, the selector including a first part of dielectric material and a second part with a metallic electrically conductive material carried by the first part and having a pattern configured in accordance with a predetermined code, portions of the metallic electrically conductive material and the first part lying in a common contact surface so as to be contacted by various ones of the electrical contacts in different positions of the selector to connect and disconnect the contacts in accordance with the pattern of conductive material, thereby selectively closing and opening the interconnections among the external circuits.

Low resistance selector switch

Disclosed herein is a fluid pressure indicator for providing visual indication whether or not the magnitude of a fluid pressure condition is above a predetermined minimum value. The indicator comprises indicating means having an indicating portion and a diaphragm. The indicating means is movable between a first extreme position in which the indicating portion is not visible and a second extreme position in which the indicating portion is visible. The diaphragm has a fixed portion and a resiliently deformable portion which is affixed to the indicating means and movable responsive to changes in the magnitude of the fluid pressure condition. The indicating means is thus movable with the resiliently deformable portion, such that whenever the magnitude of the condition is not in excess of the minimum value, the resiliently deformable diaphragm portion holds the indicating means in its said first position, but a predetermined increase in the magnitude of the condition above the minimum value will deform the deformable diaphragm resiliently, thus to move the indicating means to its said second position.

Fluid pressure indicator

A selector switch of the type having a thumbwheel selector journalled for rotation in a frame for selecting any one of a plurality of interconnections among external circuits to be connected to electrical contacts mounted in the frame, the selector including a first part of dielectric material and a second part of non-metallic electrically conductive material carried by the first part and having a pattern configured in accordance with a predetermined code and contacted by various ones of the electrical contacts in different positions of the selector to connect and disconnect the contacts in accordance with the pattern of conductive material so as to selectively close and open the interconnections among the external circuits.

An electrical cable accessory includes a generally tubular member of elastomeric material which is to be installed by placement over a cylindrical surface to grip the cylindrical surface, when in appropriate assembled relation therewith, with a predetermined gripping force established by dilation of the tubular member, the installation being facilitated by introducing fluid under pressure, through means provided in the tubular member, between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface, and simultaneously impeding the escape of the fluid under pressure from between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface by means adjacent one of the ends of the tubular member to cause dilation of the tubular member and establish a fluid layer between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface, thereby reducing the gripping force during installation.

Fluid assisted installation of electrical cable accessories

A heat transfer jacket is placed over the terminal portions of the conductors of a pair of high voltage cables which are connected in a splice connection wherein a housing surrounds the connected conductor portions, the heat transfer jacket extending longitudinally between the confronting ends of a pair of adaptor sleeves placed upon the insulation of the cables to engage and locate the adaptor sleeves relative to one another, and laterally between the conductors and the housing to provide a path of relatively high thermal conductivity between the connected conductor portions and the housing.
