A system and methods for contrast sensitivity compensation provides for correcting the vision of users whose vision is deficient for discerning high spatial frequencies. The system and methods use measurements of the user's contrast detection as a function of spatial frequency in the image to correct images in real time. The system includes a head-mountable device that includes a camera and a processor that can provide enhanced images at video framing rates.

Methods and apparatus for vision enhancement

A head mounted virtual environment display with high visual resolution and a full field of view is disclosed. The display uses an optical system in which the video displays and corresponding lenses are positioned tangent to hemispheres with centers located at the centers of rotation of a user's eyes. Centering the optical system on the center of rotation of the eye allows both a full field of view and high fidelity visual resolution, without compromising visual resolution. A multi-panel video wall design for the video displays allows each lens facet to image a miniature flat panel display at optical infinity. The flat panel displays are centered on the optical axes of the lens facets. A parallel graphics architecture uses data from high resolution and accuracy head trackers and built-in eye trackers to generate high detail 3D models at high frame rates with minimal perceptible lag. Resolution for central vision is optimized with a roaming high level of detail window, and slip artifacts associated with rapid head movements are eliminated using freeze-frame.

Head mounted display with full field of view and high resolution

The device assists those who are visually handicapped and, in particular, warns blind or visually impaired travellers that they have entered a potentially dangerous area proximal to the edge of boarding platforms of the type typically found in public railway transit systems. An InfraRed Integrated Information System consists of an array of infrared transmitters and a portable detector/warning device to be held by the blind traveller. The transmitters create a beam of infrared light which bathes the section of the platform proximal to the platform edge. As the traveller moves into the region of the platform covered by the emission, the sensors in the warning device are activated and by audio, tactile or other stimuli alert the traveller of entry into the danger zone.

Passive alarm system for blind and visually impaired individuals

A head mounted display is disclosed for providing a monocular or binocular wide field of view. The head mounted display contains a unique configuration and unique folding optics so that it can be worn like a pair of spectacles or goggles. The optics and frame of the goggles are uniquely designed to accommodate different head dimensions.

To provide for an easy and accurate color vision tester, a plurality of yellow, red and green lights are mounted, or projected, onto a display, with the yellow lights providing for the background luminance while the red and green lights providing for a mixture of red and green luminance. Different patterns on the display are formed by a combination of the red and green lights. A particular pattern can be selected from among the various patterns by a pattern select circuit. The intensity of the red to green lights can be inversely varied so that different ratios of intensity for the selected pattern may be presented to an observer. Each of these ratios corresponds to a certain type of color vision. Therefore, by determining whether an observer is able to discern the pattern from the background in a particular intensity setting, the type of color vision an observer has can easily be ascertained.

Apparatus for testing color vision

The present invention psychophysically detects earliest signs of loss of vision due to nerve loss in glaucoma and ocular hypertension. An instrument employs a dynamic random dot background field and a movable target that consists of a circular area in which the dots are spatially and temporally coherent. Thus, visual fields will be based on pattern discrimination rather than on conventional measures of luminance discrimination.
