A method of printing a job in either a first mode or a second mode, to produce a set of prints from a set of print-related information transmitted to a print file, is provided. In the first mode, which occurs when the set of print-related information is less than a preselected quantity, a portion of the print file is filled with the set of print-related information and the set of print-related information is read with a marker for producing the set of prints. In the second mode, which occurs when the set of print-related information is greater than the preselected quantity, the steps of filling a portion of the print file with a subset of the set of print-related information and reading the subset with the marker are repeated until the set of print-related information is read completely.

A method and apparatus for handling software object faults in an electronic reprographic system for scanning and synchronously or asynchronously processing and printing a plurality of jobs are described. The system is monitored for the occurrence of software object faults in a job, and when such faults are identified, the operator is informed of such software object faults prior to processing of the object. The system is provided with the means to process another object without operator intervention prior to correction of the faulted object, and to proceed with processing the faulted object after correction of the fault.

A method and apparatus for recovering from faults occurring in an electronic reprographic system capable of processing and printing a multiplicity of jobs is described. The invention provides for the monitoring of the system for the occurrence of faults in a job, interrupting printing of the job upon the occurrence of a fault and determining in which of two fault categories the fault belongs, including an automatic resumption category and a manual resumption category. The invention further provides for automatically resuming the printing of the job without operator intervention in response to clearance of a fault categorized in the automatic resumption category.

Methods for scheduling sheets in an imaging system having an endless duplex paper path loop are disclosed. Preferably, the duplex loop includes a single sheet inverter without a buffer tray so as to eliminate the problems associated therewith. The basic method involves consecutively inserting copy sheets to be imaged into the duplex loop without placing any skipped pitches therebetween regardless of set or job boundaries. Duplex side ones from subsequent sets or jobs are used to fill any gaps which exist in the duplex side one sheet stream of earlier sets or jobs. Additional refinements include using simplex sheets to fill potential skipped pitches in a duplex side one sheet stream by converting simplex sheets located immediately subsequent to the duplex sheets into duplex sheets having a blank back side and scheduling the side one imaging of the now-converted duplex sheets into the potential skipped pitches. Potential skipped pitches can also be filled by shifting an appropriate number of simplex sheets at a simplex-to-duplex transition into any potential skipped pitches in an immediately subsequent duplex side one sheet stream. Further refinements include using duplex or simplex sheets to fill gaps which exist in a duplex side two sheet stream due to skip requests which occurred during the side one scheduling, inserting or imaging.
