The products of the invention are high melting, highly insoluble N,N'-bis(arylazo)diimides prepared by reacting 2 mols of an arylazoaromatic amine with pyromellitic acid dianhydride or 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The products are colored and useful as pigments in surface coating compositions and plastics.

Novel catalysts are provided for the polymerization of olefins such as ethylene. The catalysts consist essentially of a chromium compound supported upon an inorganic carrier containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties, at least a portion of the chromium having a valence of less than 6. The inorganic carrier is an amorphous precipitate of aluminum phosphate or an amorphous precipitate containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties in an atomic ratio in the range of about 5:1 to 1:1. The catalysts are particularly useful for polymerizing ethylene in a Particle Form Process in that the catalyst has essentially no polymerization induction period and provides ethylene polymers having a desirably broad molecular weight distribution and a desirably high melt flow shear ratio.

A sperm oil substitute, having extreme pressure and anti-wear properties consisting of a lubrication composition comprising a major amount of a lubrication oil and a minor amount of an extreme pressure and anti-wear additive, comprising (I) a diester of the condensation product of (A) a dicarboxylic acid or a dicarboxylic acid anhydride, and (B) a linear unsaturated alcohol; and optionally, in combination with, (II) a linear unsaturated alcohol, wherein from about 6 weight percent to about 20 weight percent of said combined diester and linear alcohol comprising the sulfide moiety.

Extreme pressure lubricating compositions

A novel process is provided for the polymerization of ethylene in which the polymerization catalyst employed in the process is the reaction product of a vanadium ion-exchanged montmorillonite clay and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group II-A, II-B, or III-A of the Periodic Table.

Process for the polymerization of ethylene

A process for producing a mass of entangled solvent swollen polymer filaments which can be converted into paper-making fibrils by subsequent refining. An olefin polymer such as polyethylene having an inherent viscosity of at least 3.5 is dissolved in a hot solvent. The hot polymer solution is subjected to timed sequential steps in which the polymer solution first is sheared and attenuated into fine polymer streams. The hot polymer streams then are cooled to precipitate the polymer which is recovered as a mass of entangled solvent swollen filaments. These filaments can be beaten in a non-solvent liquid such as isopropanol to prepare fibrils having diameters on the order of about 5 to 30 microns and lengths of about 1 to 15 millimeters.
