An apparatus for achieving increased fuel efficiency in a nuclear reactor wherein spectral shift is utilized to adjust for excess reactivity. This feature is achieved by stationary displacer rods within the fluid moderator of the reactor, with these stationary displacer rods decreasing ineffective volume during operation of the reactor whereby the effective volume of the fluid moderator increases as the nuclear fuel is burned. This decrease in effective volume is achieved by providing a sacrificial material in the displacer rods that is dissolved (or volatilized, etc.) by the fluid moderator. The composition of the sacrificial material can be varied along the length of the rod so as to achieve the desired reduction of volume despite a temperature gradient along the rod.

Apparatus for increasing fuel efficiency in nuclear reactors

A high speed curved position sensitive porportional counter detector for use in x-ray diffraction, the detection of 5-20 keV photons and the like. The detector employs a planar anode assembly of a plurality of parallel metallic wires. This anode assembly is supported between two cathode planes, with at least one of these cathode planes having a serpentine resistive path in the form of a meander having legs generally perpendicular to the anode wires. This meander is produced by special microelectronic fabrication techniques whereby the meander 'wire' fans outwardly at the cathode ends to produce the curved aspect of the detector, and the legs of the meander are small in cross-section and very closely spaced whereby a spatial resolution of about 50 .mu.m can be achieved. All of the other performance characteristics are about as good or better than conventional position sensitive proportional counter type detectors. Count rates of up to 40,000 counts per second with 0.5 .mu.s shaping time constants are achieved.

High speed curved position sensitive detector

A solid state thermal neutron detector. The improved detector for particularly high temperature applications of thermal neutron flux determination, employs a differential thermocouple unit having the hot junction positioned within a cylindrical pellet or compact of uranium dioxide (UO.sub.2) partially enriched in uranium-235. The cold junction is positioned within a cylindrical pellet or compact of depleted uranium dioxide, this second pellet having the identical mass as the first. The uranium-containing pellets are spaced apart by a cylindrical pellet of a high temperature insulator, such as MgO or aluminum oxide (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3). Similar insulator pellets are positioned outwardly from the uranium-containing pellets to prevent heat loss. The entire assembly is enclosed in a cylindrical sheath of a material resistant to the environment of the detector, with this sheath being radially swaged upon the pellets to achieve intimate thermal contact between the pellets and the differential thermocouple. In one embodiment, a plurality of differential thermocouples are inserted in alternating pellets. In a preferred embodiment, a heater unit is included with a high temperature portion proximate the hot junction and a lower temperature portion proximate the cold junction. The thermocouple is connected to appropriate measuring circuits and monitor, and the heater is connected to a regulated and adjustable heater supply. Provision for axial movement of the detector unit and for determining absolute temperatures are discussed.
