A coordinate measuring machine is described including a vertical probe shaft mounted on an X-axis carriage in turn mounted on a Y-axis carriage for movement along three orthogonal axes, in which the Y-axis carriage is guided and supported on a first guide beam fixed extending along one side of a machine base with air bearings mounted to the lower end of one upright engaging all four sides of the first guide beam. The Y-axis carriage is also supported on a second guide beam fixed extending along the other side of the base, with air bearings mounted to the lower end of the other upright engaging only the top and bottom surfaces. A lower crossmember beam connects the lower ends of the upright to increase stiffness of the Y-axis carriage. A cast aluminum table is supported on the base with three cast in support features projecting from the underside, configured to minimize thermal distortion, with a steel plate bonded into a recess in the upper surface. A particular releasable lead screw drive for the carriages and probe shaft is described as well as a counterbalance for the probe shaft, and a preloading pin assembly for some of the air bearings.

Coordinate measuring machine construction

A joystick controller (38) for three axis control of a powered element such as a probe shaft (24) of a coordinate measuring machine (10) is disclosed in which a joystick handle assembly (40) is mounted for pivoting movement along either of orthogonal horizontal X or Y axis, with a plunger (64) mounted within a hollow joystick shaft (58) for up and down movement along a vertical Z axis orthogonal to the X and Y axes. Control signal generators, such as potentiometer assemblies (84, 106, 134), are drivingly engaged with the hollow joystick shaft (58) and plunger (64), each generating control signals corresponding to each motion of the joystick handle assembly (40). These signals are used to produce corresponding controlled movement of the probe shaft (24) of the coordinate measuring machine (10) along respective X, Y and Z axes. In the first embodiment, the hollow joystick shaft (58) carries, at its lower end, a Z axis potentiometer assembly (106) which is operated by an actuator arm (112) engaged by the plunger (64). A gear rack (146) acting on rotary actuator gear (148) directly operates Z axis potentiometer assembly (106) in an alternate embodiment.

Joystick for three axis control of a powered element

A bridge type coordinate measuring machine characterized by a bridge (20) that has a closed loop configuration encircling the measuring machine base (10). The bridge (20) includes two uprights (21, 22), an upper member (23) connecting the uprights together and at least one lower member (24) connecting the uprights together below the upper surface (11) of the base (10). Bearings (41) for the bridge are offset inwardly from the vertical axes of the uprights of the bridge and a guideway (12, 13), along which the bearings travel, is located on each side of the base. The bearings (41) operate upwardly, downwardly and sidewardly against the surfaces of the guideways (12, 13) located on the sides of the base (10). This arrangement both stiffens and raises the resonant frequency of the bridge, thereby improving the measuring accuracy and repeatability of the coordinate measuring machines performance.
