A vertical processing vessel includes an upper feed zone, an intermediate treatment zone and a lower removal zone, with the treatment zone including an improved system for distributing treating fluids uniformly across the cross-section of the vessel. The system provides for mutually perpendicular fluid distributing tubes which, in the preferred embodiment, has one set of tubes that extend completely across the vessel and a second set of perpendicular tubes that merely penetrate the wall of the vessel to deliver treating fluids along the perimeter of the vessel. The degree to which the delivery tubes in the second set penetrate the vessel is determined by the size of the vessel so that optimal conditions are attained for the delivery of the treating fluids.

There is disclosed method and apparatus for cleaning roots, tubers, bulbs, and the like, for example, sugar beets, chicory, Jerusalem artichokes, dahlia, potato, and onions (hereinafter 'articles'). In the apparatus, spaced horizontal rollers have helices on their cylindrical surfaces which scroll the articles laterally to the ends of the rollers where they are deposited on a slide that removes them from the cleaner, or, optionally, returns the articles to the cleaner at strategically located lower positions for stalk removal and/or leaf stripping, or for other desired cleaning. The first sets of rollers are designed to separate small chips, small stones and loose soil from the articles. The next sets of rollers are designed to remove adhering soil and/or mud, weeds, and larger stones. Strategic placement sizing, rotational speed, and direction of rotation of the helices on the rollers are instrumental in removing leaves, stalks, weeds, breaking up dirt clods and mud balls, and cleaning of the articles. A collector for stones and chips is located at the ends, and between pairs, of all rollers. The stone and chip collectors have an adjustable opening for receiving stones and chips, but rejecting the articles. Separation of rocks or stools from the articles is accomplished by increasing the slope of the cleaning apparatus to where the rocks and stools go straight down the screen and the articles are carried to the sides of the cleaning apparatus.

Method and apparatus for cleaning roots, tubers, bulbs, and the like

A seed drill includes a novel planting assembly combining press wheels for packing angular sides of a furrow and a runner immediately behind and longitudinally aligned with the press wheel. The runner includes an arcuate front edge that is juxtaposed immediately behind the coulter, thereby preventing accumulation of field trash between them. The runner extends rearwardly from beneath the press wheel and is transversely guided on the supporting vehicle frame of the drill to maintain it in longitudinal alignment within an open longitudinal slot cut through the soil and intersecting the base of the packed furrow. Seed is dropped into the open slot prior to being covered with soil. Moist soil can be packed along the sides of the furrow to maintain the furrow in an open condition during seed germination and plant emergence. Highly accurate planting depth control can be achieved, with provision for upward relative movement of the runner as required by encountered field conditions.

The runner extends rearwardly from beneath the press wheel at the lower end of an arcuate shank that is transversely guided on the press wheel structure or frame of the drill to maintain it in longitudinal alignment within an open longitudinal slot cut through the soil and intersecting the base of the packed furrow. The shank is guided by a series of rollers within a guide frame pivotally mounted on a supporting frame for motion about a transverse horizontal axis. Highly accurate planting depth control can be achieved, with provision for upward relative movement of the runner as required by encountered field conditions.

An apparatus and method for reducing sugar, crystal impact damage and lump formation in a centrifugal provides a resilient barrier ring which absorbs most of the impact energy of the crystals and which deflects the crystals so they are not struck by trailing high speed crystals. An air flow causes vibration of the barrier ring to prevent crystal sticking which could lead to lump formation. This air flow also reduces moisture content in the sugar housing to further reduce lump formation.

An annular compartment is disposed below the mixing ring of a rotating-basket, massecuite-separating centrifuge, to receive the magma therein. Eductors arrayed in the compartment receive hot water, and ingest magma, to eject the mix therethrough and to centrifuge the mix, while melting the sugar crystals in the magma. The melted crystals, now high brix sugar liquid, is overflowed into a companion compartment; from thence the liquid is passed over a weir, into a sub-compartment, for subsequent discharge.

An auxiliary support for permitting longitudinal travel of transversely elongated agricultural implements comprises a pivoted lifting frame adapted to extend outwardly and downwardly to elevationally raise the implement framework at one side. The outer end of the lifting frame is provided with a wheel aligned in the desired longitudinal direction of travel. An adjustable and removable saddle has an extension that overlies the implement frame to permit interposition of a conventional jack to raise and lower the implement framework as required. The elevated implement framework is held in a travel position by chains extending between the outer end of the lifting frame and brackets attached to the implement framework. A foldable hitch frame can be provided at one side of the implement framework to facilitate towing of the implement in a direction perpendicular to its normal direction of field movement.

Lifting assembly for agricultural implements

A seed drill including depending furrow openers having a lower shovel and a supporting seed boot. Each seed boot is pivotally supported on a longitudinal drag bar assembly connected to it about a transverse pivotal connection. The forwardly extending arm at the upper end of the seed boot selectively engages one end of a longitudinal leaf spring mounted to the drag arm assembly. A preselected planting position for the shovel and seed boot is defined by an overlying adjustable stop. An arcuate abutment surface is interposed between the seed boot arm and leaf spring. A stop is interposed between the drag arm assembly and leaf spring for limiting upward movement of the free spring end.

Trip mechanism for drill seed boot

A press wheel improvement for seed drills in which one or more open recesses are presented through the circular rim of the press wheel to form transverse dams along packed furrow walls. The recesses are bounded by walls that present a projecting tab extended beyond the conical wheel surfaces. A complementary insert can be fastened to each tab when damming of the furrows is not desired or required by field conditions. The tabs cooperate with straw walkers to assist in clearing trash and preventing obstruction of the straw walkers by rocks wedged between them and the conical press wheel walls.
