Coated multilayer polyethylene films having improved sealability and barrier properties are provided. The films include a substrate which has been oriented in the machine direction to a degree of from about 5:1 to about 8:1 and in the direction transverse to the machine direction to a degree of from about 6:1 to about 15:1, and a coating selected from the group including polyvinylidene chloride, low temperature seal coating, polyvinyl alcohol polymer and acrylic coating. The substrate has a high density polyethylene base layer and at least a first skin layer adhered to a first side of the base layer.

Coated multilayer polyethylene film

A high density polyethylene (HDPE) film is provided having high-biaxial orieniation. The film includes HDPE having a density of at least about 0.940, and a melt index of from about 0.5 to about 10. The film is stretched in the machine (longitudinal) direction to a degree of from about 5:1 to about 8:1, preferably from about 6:1 to about 7:1. The film is also stretched in the transverse (lateral) direction to a degree of from about 6:1 to about 15:1, preferably from about 9:1 to about 13:1. Preferably, the film has an orientation imbalance, with a higher degree of transverse orientation than machine orientation. Skin layers such as heat seal layers can be provided. Preferably, the film contains one or more layers of a casting promoter material employed to promote casting of a high gauge HDPE sheet subsequently high biaxially oriented to provide the film. The film can also be cavitated, or otherwise modified (e.g., corona-treated, coated, metallized, etc.) to provide films suitable for special applications. The film of the invention has superior properties, including lower water vapor transmission rate, better dead-fold, higher tensile strength, and consistent gauge profile. Also provided is a method for making the biaxially oriented film.

High density polyethylene film with high biaxial orientation

A multilaminar high density polyethylene (HDPE) film is provided having high biaxial orientation. The film includes a HDPE substrate, at least one outer layer of a propylene copolymer, and at least one layer of an adhesion promoter material positioned between the outer layer and the HDPE substrate, to efficiently mediate adhesion therebetween. The adhesion promoter is preferably a polyethylene material having a density lower than that of the HDPE base material. Preferred adhesion promoter materials include very low density polyethylene (VLDPE), high pressure low density polyethylene (HP-LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and medium density polyethylene (MDPE). The film is high biaxially oriented, being, stretched in the machine direction to a degree of from about 5:1 to about 8:1, preferably from about 6:1 to about 7:1, and stretched in the transverse direction to a degree of from about 6:1 to about 15:1, preferably from about 9:1 to about 13:1.

Multilaminar high density polyethylene film with high biaxial orientation

A polymeric film substrate having on at least one surface a prime coating of the type which causes destructive film blocking between contacting layers. This prime coating is top coated with pigmented or non-pigment polyester ink base so as to eliminate the blocking. This top coating is a excellent base for printing inks.

Multilayer film structure

A printable film structure comprising a polymeric film substrate having on at least one surface thereof a prime coating of the type which causes destructive film blocking between contacting layers of such coated films, said prime coating having thereon a continuous copolyester coating consisting essentially of the polyester condensation product of the following monomers or their polyester forming equivalence: (a) about 60 to 75 mole % of terephthalic acid; (b) about 15 to 25 mole % of at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of the formula HOOC(CH.sub.2).sub.n COOH, wherein n ranges from about 1 to 11; (c) greater than from about 6 up to about 15 mole % of at least one sulfomonomer containing an alkali metal sulfonate group attached to a dicarboxylic aromatic nucleus; and (d) stoichiometric quantities of about 100 mole % of at least one copolymerizable aliphatic or cycloalphatic alkylene glycol having from about 2 to 11 carbon atoms.
