Provided is a seal assembly, a method for sealing, and a well system. The seal assembly, in one aspect, includes a pipe having an outer tubular positioned thereabout, the outer tubular and pipe forming an enclosed seal gland. The seal assembly, according to this aspect, further includes expanded metal positioned within the enclosed seal gland, the expanded metal comprising a metal that has expanded in response to hydrolysis to assist in sealing the enclosed seal gland.

Using expandable metal as an alternate to existing metal to metal seals

A system is described for forming a debris barrier downhole in a wellbore. The system may include a mandrel, a retrievable downhole tool, and a debris ring. The mandrel may be positionable within a wellbore. The retrievable downhole tool may be positionable around the mandrel to perform tasks downhole in the wellbore. The debris ring may include an expandable material positionable around the mandrel to form a debris barrier. The debris barrier may be formed in response to exposing the expandable material to wellbore fluid.

A system for an adjustably flexible downhole tool includes first and second connector ends each configured to connect to adjacent downhole tools and a shaft extending between the first and second connector ends. The shaft is configured to bend in response to passing through curved portions of a wellbore. The adjustably flexible downhole tool also includes an outer sleeve disposed around at least a portion of the shaft and extending from the first connector end in a direction toward the second connector end and at least one adjustable member configured to move axially, with respect to the shaft, from a first position to a second position to increase bending stiffness and/or torsional stiffness of the adjustably flexible downhole tool. The at least one adjustable member at least partially restrains bending of the shaft in the second position.

A 3D printed barrel slip that includes a radially expandable barrel slip body that is movable from an unexpanded position to an expanded position; wherein the body has an outer surface that, when in the unexpanded position, defines a first radius; wherein the first radius is associated with a first curvature; and wherein, when in the expanded position, portion(s) of the outer surface has a second curvature that is less than the first radius. The body is an integrally formed single-component body that defines an external surface; and an internal chamber isolated from the external surface. The internal chambers affect the strength of portions of the body to control the timing of deployment of the barrel slip.

A well tool may include a slip disposed about a mandrel and a plurality of individual wedge sections axially arranged adjacent one another between the mandrel and the slip. In at least one example, a gap is defined between adjacent wedge sections allowing a range of axial movement of one wedge section toward the other. A compliant member is disposed between the adjacent wedge sections resisting movement of the one toward the other. The compliant members may have different sizes and configurations to selectively yield at different axial loads, so that the wedge sections progressively load the slip.

A high-expansion slip/wedge system may include at least one slip and actuatable wedge disposable about the mandrel. The actuatable wedge includes an actuator ramp configured to urge the slip radially outwardly in response to axial movement of the actuatable wedge in direct engagement with the slip ramp. A wedge extender, which may be part of a kit, is removably disposable along the mandrel intermediate the slip ramp and actuatable wedge to support increased expansion. The wedge extender may include an inwardly facing ramp engageable by the actuatable wedge and an outwardly facing ramp for engaging the slip ramp. The wedge extender provides additional engagement area for supporting and optionally increasing the amount of radial expansion.
