A glazing panel having beneficial anti-solar properties comprises a vitreous substrate carrying a tin/antimony oxide coating layer containing tin and antimony in a Sb/Sn molar ratio of from 0.01 to 0.14. In one application the coated substrate has a solar factor FS of less than 70% and the panel is formed by chemical vapor deposition from a reactant mixture comprising a source of tin and a source of antimony. In another application it is particularly suitable for use in vehicle glazing, in particular in vehicle roof windows, and the coated substrate has a spray-formed pyrolytic tin/antimony oxide coating having a thickness of at least 400 nm and, whereby the coated substrate has a luminous transmittance (TL) of less than 35% and a selectivity (TL/TE) of at least 1.3.

Glazing panel having solar screening properties

A method of manufacturing a glazing panel having a solar factor (FS) of less than 70% and being composed of a vitreous substrate and a tin/antimony oxide coating layer provided on the vitreous substrate and having a Sb/Sn molar ratio ranging from 0.01 to 0.5, preferable 0.03 to 0.5, the method including the steps of providing reactants in gaseous phase which comprise tin and antimony compounds, which are present in an amount effective to form the tin/antimony oxide coating layer; and forming the tin/antimony oxide coating layer pyrolytically on the vitreous substrate from the reactants in gaseous phase to provide the glazing panel having a solar factor (FS) of less than 70%.

Method of manufacturing a glazing panel

A solar control transparent glass sheet is provided by a soda-lime glass sheet carrying a coating of at least two pyrolytically-formed layers, characterised by the presence in the coating of a conductive or semi-conductive layer having a thickness in the range 15 to 500 nm and formed of a material comprising a metal oxide containing a dopant in an amount of from 1 to 100 moles per 100 moles of the metal oxide, the said metal oxide being selected from one or more of tungsten trioxide (W0 ), molybdenum trioxide (MoO ), niobium pentoxide (Nb O ), tantalum pentoxide (Ta O ), vanadium pentoxide (V O ) and vanadium dioxide (VO ), whereby the so-coated sheet has a neutral or blue tint in transmission and in reflection, a luminous transmittance (TL) which is in the range 30 to 85% and a selectivity of greater than 1, preferably greater than 1.2.

Solar control coated glass

A glazing panel having a solar factor (FS) of less than 70% includes a sheet of glass; and at least two coating layers provided on the sheet of glass including first and second coating layers, the first coating layer being composed of tin and antimony oxides and having a Sb/Sn molar ratio ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 and being one of (A) pyrolytically formed from reactants in a gaseous phase or (B) pyrolytically spray formed, and the second coating layer being composed of tin oxide doped with fluorine.

A device for the formation, by pyrolysis, of a coating composed of metal or a metal compound on a face of a hot glass substrate which is in motion by bringing the face into contact with a gaseous reagent, includes a vault; support device for conveying the hot glass substrate along a path through a coating chamber defined between the vault and the face; device for supplying and distributing gaseous reagent to the coating chamber as a flow; and device for discharging exhaust gas from the coating chamber. The device for supplying and distributing gaseous reagent includes an ejection nozzle having defined therein a slot which opens directly into the coating chamber and has longitudinal internal walls which are substantially parallel to each other. The ejection nozzle has longitudinal internal walls which define a continuous convergent path which terminates at and communicates with the slot and which has an angle of convergence (.alpha.), thereby causing the flow of gaseous reagent to conform to the slot. The angle of convergence (.alpha.) of the convergent path ranges from 4.degree. to 14.degree. at any point.

Device for forming a pyrolytic coating

A method of manufacturing a metal oxide coated glass which is a glass substrate bearing a pyrolytically formed coating composed of at least two metal oxides and which has a corrosion resistance at least equal to 5 as determined by Applicants' defined transmission test, the method including contacting a hot glass substrate with a coating precursor material composed of a tin-containing material and a titanium-containing material in the presence of oxygen to form a metal oxide coating composed of at least two metal oxides including tin oxide and titanium oxide on the hot glass substrate by pyrolyzing the coating precursor material as it contacts the hot glass substrate, wherein the titanium-containing material comprises a titanium chelate which is a reaction product of octyleneglycol titanate and acetylacetone.

Method of manufacturing a corrosion resistant pyrolytically coated glass

A glazing panel produced by pyrolytic coating of a substrate is described. One absorbent coating layer comprises at least one metal oxide selected from the oxides of chromium, cobalt and iron. A non-absorbent coating layer, in contact with absorbent layer comprises a material having a refractive index n(.lambda.) within the range 1.4 to 3.0. The glazing panel exhibits a color purity of greater than 16%, as measured by reflection from the coated side; and a solar factor of less than 70%.

Glazing panel and process for forming the same

A device for the formation, by pyrolysis, of a coating on a face of a hot glass substrate includes a vault; support elements for conveying the substrate along a path through a coating chamber defined between the main vault and the substrate; elements for supplying and distributing gaseous reagent to the coating chamber; elements for discharging exhaust gas from the coating chamber; and a plurality of struts. The elements for supplying and distributing gaseous reagent to the coating chamber include an ejection nozzle having defined therein a slot which opens directly into the coating chamber, has opposing longitudinal internal walls, extends transverse to the path of the substrate, and has a length which is substantially equal to the coating width of the coating formed. The plurality of struts are positioned at spaced intervals and connect the opposing walls of the slot together to thereby maintain the walls of the slot in substantially parallel disposition. The ejection nozzle has longitudinal internal walls which define a continuous convergent path which terminates at and communicates with the slot and has an angle of convergence (.alpha.), thereby causing the flow of gaseous reagent to conform to the slot, the angle of convergence (.alpha.) of the convergent path being up to but not greater than 14.degree. at any point. Alternatively, instead of a plurality of struts, the device may include elements for trapping stray deposits including at least one metal bar disposed below the vault of the coating chamber.

Device for forming a pyrolytic coating on a hot glass substrate

A device for the formation, by pyrolysis, of a coating of metal or a metal compound on one face of a hot glass substrate which is in motion by bringing the face into contact with a gaseous reagent includes a roof; support device for conveying the hot glass substrate along a path through a coating chamber defined between the roof and the face of the hot glass substrate; at least one reagent gas inlet in the form of a slot opening directly into the coating chamber and extending transverse to the path of the hot glass substrate for supplying and distributing gaseous reagent to the coating chamber; and at least one exhaust gas outlet for discharging exhaust gas from the coating chamber. At least during operation of the device a movable shield device is positioned in the coating chamber adjacent the roof thereof, and, prior to operation of the device, the device includes a device for positioning a movable shield device in the coating chamber adjacent the roof thereof, to reduce the formation of deposits on the roof of the coating chamber.

Device and method for forming a coating by pyrolysis

A method is described for monitoring the thickness and uniformity of a transparent coating applied to a substrate in sheet form. The method comprises directing polychromatic light at the coating at a plurality of locations and measuring the intensity of light reflected from said coating. At each location, the intensity of reflected light is measured at at least two discrete monitoring wavelengths and said measurements are processed to generate an electrical signal which may be compared with one or more predetermined threshold values and with such electrical signals generated at other locations to yield indications of whether the thickness and uniformity of the coating lies within predetermined tolerance values.. The first discrete monitoring wavelength lies in the range 400 to 480 nm (blue) and the second discrete monitoring wavelength lies in the range 580 to 750 nm (red). A third discrete monitoring wavelength, which lies in the range 480 to 580 nm (green) may also be used. The monitoring results may be used to adjust the coating process.

Thin film thickness monitoring with the intensity of reflected light

A coated glass substrate includes a glass substrate; and a metal oxide coating provided on the glass substrate, which metal oxide coating is a pyrolytically formed oxidized metal coating, includes a metal oxide layer whose metal constituents consist essentially of aluminum atoms and vanadium atoms in an amount ranging from about 2% to about 10% of the aluminum atoms, and has a refractive index of at least 1.67. Additionally, a coated glass substrate includes a glass substrate; a metal oxide undercoat which is provided on the glass substrate and which is a pyrolytically formed oxidized metal coating whose metal constituents consist essentially of aluminum atoms and vanadium atoms in an amount ranging from about 2% to about 10% of the aluminum atoms; and a tin oxide overcoat which is provided on the metal oxide undercoat and which is a pyrolytically formed tin oxide coating, wherein the metal oxide undercoat has an optical thickness selected to reduce reflected visible light optical interference effects due to the tin oxide overcoat. Such a tin oxide coated glass exhibits reduced iridescence and reduced interfacial haze from sodium ion migration.

Apparatus for pyrolytically forming an oxide coating on an upper face of a moving, hot glass substrate, including a substrate path and a downwardly opening hood positioned along the substrate path and defining together with the substrate path a coating chamber; support device for conveying a hot glass substrate along the substrate path past the coating chamber; a device for introducing coating precursor material in the vapor phase into a carrier gas stream comprised of a carrier gas including a device for inducing turbulence in the carrier gas stream to ensure intimate mixing of the carrier gas and the coating precursor material; a device including at least one venturi for introducing oxygen into the precursor-containing carrier gas stream before it enters the coating chamber and provide a gas mixture stream; a device for supplying to the coating chamber the gas mixture stream; and a device for aspirating atmosphere including coating reaction products and unused coating precursor material from the coating chamber.

Apparatus for pyrolytically forming an oxide coating on a hot glass

In methods of forming a coating comprising a pyrolytically formed oxide layer on a travelling hot glass substrate, the substrate is contacted with coating precursor material in the presence of oxygen. In order to prevent interaction between the glass of the substrate and the coating precursor material used for applying an upper coating stratum, and/or to facilitate modification of the optical or other properties of the coating as a whole, an oxide substratum of said coating ('the undercoating layer') is pyrolytically formed in an incompletely oxidized state by contacting the substrate in an undercoating chamber with undercoat precursor material in the presence of oxygen in insufficient quantity for full oxidation of the undercoat material on the substrate and such undercoat is overcoated with an upper coating layer while it is still in an incompletely oxidized state, and while the substrate is still hot, thereby to preserve such undercoat in an incompletely oxidized state.

Method of coating glass

A method of pyrolytically forming a silicon oxide coating on a hot glass substrate as it travels past a coating chamber includes contacting the substrate with silane-containing coating precursor material in the presence of oxygen. The silane-containing coating precursor material is in the vapor phase and it and gaseous oxygen are intimately mixed before they enter the coating chamber to contact the substrate. Silane as coating precursor material may be conveyed towards the coating chamber in vapor phase in a substantially inert carrier gas stream and oxygen introduced into the silane-containing carrier gas stream before it enters the coating chamber. The coating operation may take place within a coating chamber within a float chamber in which the glass is formed into ribbon.
