An acoustic telemetry apparatus and method for communicating encoded digital data from a down-hole location through a borehole to the surface is described including an acoustic channel terminated at a down-hole end by a reflecting terminal (), an acoustic wave generator () located at the surface and providing an acoustic wave carrier signal through said acoustic, channel, a modulator () located down-hole to modulate amplitude and/or phase of said carrier wave in response to an encoded digital signal and one or more sensors () located at the surface adapted to detect amplitude and/or phase related information of acoustic waves traveling within said acoustic channel to determine the encoded digital data.

Borehole telemetry system

A system that is usable with a subterranean well includes an assembly and a telemetry tool. The system includes an assembly that performs a downhole measurement. The system also includes a downhole telemetry tool to modulate a carrier stimulus that is communicated through a downhole fluid to communicate the downhole measurement uphole.

Borehold telemetry system

A technique that is usable with a well includes using at least one downhole sensor to establish telemetry within the well. The sensor(s) are used as a permanent sensing device.

Borehole communication and measurement system

A method is disclosed for reducing noise in a measured telemetry signal. The method includes tracking a characteristic of at least one harmonic of a noise component in the measured telemetry signal band. The at least one harmonic has a frequency outside a telemetry signal band. The characteristic of the noise component is determined for at least one other harmonic thereof. The at least one other harmonic has a frequency inside the telemetry signal band. A noise reference is generated from the characteristic of the in band harmonic, and the noise reference is combined with the measured telemetry signal to generate a noise-canceled telemetry signal.
