Optical communication system communicates between an array of originating tiles and an array of terminating tiles. Each array is associated with a lenslet array, such as a two-layer array which has two layers of lenslets. Each originating tile has an array of transmitters and each terminating tile has an array of receivers. Each tile is associated with a common lenslet or lenslet pair. A beamlet from a representative transmitter passes through the lenslet pair adjacent to its tile to become a collimated beam whose angle is related to the location of the transmitter. The collimated beam passes through the receiver lenslet pair adjacent to the tile containing the receiver associated with the representative transmitter, and is focused onto that receiver by that lenslet pair. The system may operate in the reverse direction, wherein the transmitters are transmitter-receivers, the receivers are receiver-transmitters, and a beam from a receiver-transmitter is directed to its corresponding transmitter-receiver.

Bidirectional wavelength cross connects include a plurality of ports, each configured to receive an input optical signals, each input optical signal having a plurality of spectral bands. At least one of the plurality of ports is disposed to simultaneously transmit an output optical signal having at least one of the spectral bands. A plurality of wavelength routing elements are configured to selectively route input optical signal spectral bands to output optical signals.

Bidirectional wavelength cross connect architectures using wavelength routing elements

Apparatus for diversely routing optical wavelengths across a point-to-point subnetwork. An optical network includes a first optical ring having at least first, second, and third nodes adjacently positioned; a second optical ring having at least fourth, fifth, and sixth nodes adjacently positioned, pairs of optical fibers link the adjacent nodes; a point-to-point subnetwork having at least first, second, third, and fourth optical fibers optically coupling the first and second optical rings. The first node is configured to route working bands across the first optical fiber to the fifth node and to route a copy of the working bands to the second node. The second node is configured to route either the copy of the working bands or a select subset of the copy of the working bands across the third optical fiber to the fourth node.

Optical interconnection for traffic between a pair of DWDM rings

An optical cross connect architecture is provided in which the density of spectral bands on optical signals through the cross connect may vary. The general functionality of such variable-density optical cross connect is to receive input optical signals that each have multiple spectral bands and to transmit output optical signals each having one or more of the spectral bands. A concentrator redistributes the spectral bands from the input optical signals among a smaller number of first intermediate optical signals. A core cross connect redistributes the spectral bands on the first intermediate optical signals among second intermediate optical signals. An expander redistributes the spectral bands on the second intermediate optical signals among a greater number of output optical signals.

Variable-density optical cross-connect architectures and upgrades

An optical wavelength cross connect is provided to receive multiple input optical signals that each have multiple spectral bands and to transmit multiple output optical signals that each have one or more of those spectral bands. The optical wavelength cross connect includes multiple wavelength routing elements, which are optical components that selectively route wavelength components between one optical signal and multiple optical signals in either direction according to a configurable state. As used within the optical wavelength cross connect, each of the wavelength routing elements receives at least one optical signal corresponding to one of the input optical signals. A mapping of the spectral bands to the output optical signals is determined by the states of the wavelength routing elements.

An optical wavelength cross connect is provided to receive multiple input optical signals that each have multiple spectral bands and to transmit multiple output optical signals that each have one or more of those spectral bands. The optical wavelength cross connect includes multiple wavelength routing elements, which are optical components that selectively route wavelength components between one optical signal and multiple optical signals in either direction according to a configurable state.

A wavelength router that selectively directs spectral bands between an input port and a set of output ports. The router includes a free-space optical train disposed between the input ports and said output ports, and a routing mechanism. The free-space optical train can include air-spaced elements or can be of generally monolithic construction. The optical train includes a dispersive element such as a diffraction grating, and is configured so that the light from the input port encounters the dispersive element twice before reaching any of the output ports. The routing mechanism includes one or more routing elements and cooperates with the other elements in the optical train to provide optical paths that couple desired subsets of the spectral bands to desired output ports. The routing elements are disposed to intercept the different spectral bands after they have been spatially separated by their first encounter with the dispersive element.

Wavelength router

An optical routing apparatus that allows flexible and effective routing of optical signals between input and output ports is provided. The apparatus makes use of one or more linearly actuated mirrors, with different routing configurations of the optical signals resulting from different mirror positions. For each such mirror, the linear actuation is may be performed along an axis that is either parallel or perpendicular to the mirror surface.
