An apparatus for conducting an engineering analysis of a structural product is provided. The apparatus produces a computer-aided design (CAD) model of the structural product including component parts joined by fasteners and produces a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) model of the structural product from the CAD model. The apparatus assigns one or more electrical properties to a mesh of elements representing the component parts and fasteners, and performs a finite-difference time-domain analysis on the FDTD model with the one or more electrical properties assigned, and with the FDTD model exposed to simulated lightning, to predict an impact of lightning on the fasteners and therefrom generate a corresponding prediction. The apparatus produces an output based on the corresponding prediction that indicates one or more levels of the impact of lightning on the fasteners and displays the output to facilitate design or manufacture of the structural product.

Engineering analysis of a structural product

Detailed mapping of the magnetosphere is made possible by deploying hundreds of attitude-impervious microsatellites, in the form of small corner reflectors with piezoelectric mirror surfaces, from a single mother satellite at spacings of as little as 1 km in equatorial and elliptical orbits. The microsatellites carry magnetosensors whose output is transmitted to a ground station by modulating the reflection of a laser beam transmitted to the microsatellite by the ground station. Various refinements of the laser data link are also disclosed.

A wind-damage-resistant structure for producing shade comprises a perimeter of spaced uprights surrounding a tract of land; interior uprights within the perimeter; a lower network of supporting cables fastened to the land outside of the perimeter and supported by the uprights, a shade-producing fabric cover fixed at its edges to the upper parts of the perimeter uprights and supported by the lower network of cables, an upper network of restraining cables also fastened to the land outside of the perimeter and supported by the uprights, the lower network and the cover, and holddown cables at intervals within the structure, fastened at their lower end to the land and passing upwardly through the lower network, the cover and attached to the upper network so as to restrain wind-induced upward motion of the cover.

Shade-producing structure and method

A vehicular herbicide spraying apparatus having a mobile support frame, a reservoir for herbicide, a spray means for dispensing the herbicide, a means for measuring the flow rate of the herbicide being sprayed, shields enclosing the spray means to protect plants from herbicide overspray in their vicinity, and cleaning means for intermittently washing off any herbicide which may be retained on the surface of the plant shield.
