High purity polyether polyol compositions such as polyethylene glycol are made having small amounts of impurities such as oligomers of active hydrogen compounds with alkylene oxides. The high purity is achieved by subjecting the polyether polyol compositions to membrane filtration to get less than about 10 parts per million of the low molecular weight oligomers.

Polyalkylhydrosiloxanes that are soluble in glycol are used to stabilize antifreeze/coolant formulations that contain inorganic silicate corrosion inhibitors. The stabilizers have the following formula

Residual geothermal steam containing hydrogen sulfide from a steam turbine is condensed with an aqueous solution of ferric chelate whereby the hydrogen sulfide is converted to free sulfur and the ferric chelate is converted to ferrous chelate. The ferrous chelate is subsequently oxidized back to the ferric state and reused.

Purifying geothermal steam

Residual geothermal steam containing hydrogen sulfide from a steam turbine is condensed with an aqueous solution of ferric chelate in a direct or indirect condensor whereby the hydrogen sulfide is converted to free sulfur and the ferric chelate is converted to ferrous chelate. The ferrous chelate is subsequently oxidized back to the ferric state and reused.

Alkali metal iodates are converted to the corresponding periodate by contacting the iodate with a hydroxide of the same or different alkali metal and an oxygen containing gas at temperatures of from 150.degree. C. to 600.degree. C.
