Further, the invention comprises methods of additional processing steps tp produce compositions having a predetermined alkaloid ratio or profiles to meet particular considerations for final products. The compositions of the present invention may be processed for specific uses such as tablets or other oral delivery vehicles. A method of producing a processed kava product involves using an extraction solvent, such as liquid CO, to preferentially extract different kavalactones from the source material at different rates. By controlling the extraction parameters and stopping the extraction before all of the kavalactones have been extracted or allowing the extracted kavalactones to be preferentially precipitated in one or more collection environments, a processed kava product can be produced that has a kavalactone distribution profile that can differ substantially from that of the source material. As a result, roots from a less desirable kava cultivar can be used to produce a processed kava product which has a kavalactone distribution profile that is similar to that of a highly desired cultivar. A material having a preferred kavalactone distribution profile is also disclosed. The kava paste can be further processed to produce a dry flowable powder suitable for use in, e.g., a tableting formula. A rapid dissolve tablet formulation for use in the delivery of kavalactones is also disclosed.

The present invention is a method for enhancing the efficacy of an active ingredient in a human comprising: administering to said human a product comprising: a kavalactone component and an active ingredient, wherein said active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of a therapeutic, a pharmaceutical, a nutraceutical and a botanical, and wherein said kavalactone component comprises a methysticin component, a dihydromethysticin component, a desmethoxyyangonin component, a yangonin component, a dihydrokavain component, and a kavain component, and wherein said kavalactone component is between about 0.1% to about 75%, by mass, of said product.

Kavalactone product

An improved method of cultivating kava plants is disclosed in which a growth medium is formed form a mound formed over a leveled bed of porous rocks, such as volcanic cinders. The bed material is substantially free of organic matter. The mound material is comprised of gravel smaller than the bed material, such as volcanic gravel, and includes organic matter. The kava plants are grown in the mound material. The plants can be harvested by lifting the plant from the mound using a modified forklift assembly. Relatively high mounded rows of other material can alternatively be used. An improved method of producing kava seedlings is also disclosed in which the apical tips of kava plant stems are cut. After buds develop along the stems, the stems are harvested, sectioned, and used to generate a large number of seedlings. Harvesting of remaining rootstock from the parent plant is delayed after harvesting of the stems to promote an increase in kavalactone concentration.
