An improved apparatus is provided for burning hydrocarbon-containing matter as a result of, for example, testing operations on a subterranean well wherein the hydrocarbon-containing matter is atomized and sprayed outwardly from a ring of nozzles whose axes define an outwardly flaring cone. Preferably, the atomization of the hydrocarbon-containing matter in the nozzles is accomplished by introducing pressurized air and combustible gases at a shear angle of approximately 60.degree.. Pressurized water is issued as a conical spray from an orifice located within the ring of orifices for the hydrocarbon-containing matter so as to direct a conical spray of atomized water within the cone of flame resulting from the combustion of the atomized hydrocarbon-containing matter, thereby insuring a maximum conversion of smoke producing elements in the flame to relatively smoke abating hydrocarbons. The included angle of the water spary cone is greater than that of the cone defined by the nozzles for the hydrocarbon-containing matter to insure the intersection of the water spray with the interior of the flame cone at a distance spaced from approximately two to six feet beyond the end face of the nozzle.

A test assembly is provided for incorporation within a blowout preventer stack above a subterranean well and provides inner and outer latching connections between upper and lower portions of a tubular conduit extendible to a production zone within the well. The test assembly has valve means in the lower conduit portion manipulatable between open and closed positions by a reciprocable actuator to control flow of fluid within the conduit. Retaining means are provided for each of the inner and outer latches to insure that such latches may not be disengaged when the valve means is in other than an open position. The retaining means are operable by either the application of fluid pressure or through mechanical manipulation of the tubing string to be shifted to a non-retaining position relative to both the inner and outer latches, thus permitting selective disconnection and reconnection of the upper and lower portions of the tubular conduit.

The disclosure provides a valve for an annulus defined between a tubular work string or other conduit and a surrounding annular portion of an operative element disposed on production string, such as a safety valve. The annulus valve comprises an annular valve body, which may comprise an elastomeric mass, which is urged by resilient means into sealing engagement with the exterior of the tubular work string and is shiftable out of such sealing engagement, such as by an annular piston which is responsive to control fluid pressure. The same control fluid pressure may be utilized to operate the safety valve to its open position.

A ball valve assembly is provided for elimination of the tearing of the annular elastomeric seal which normally engages the periphery of such ball valve due to the movement of the valve with excessive loading imposed on the elastomeric seal. A spring pressed element engages the portion of the ball opposite the position of the annular elastomeric seal and exerts a substantially constant loading force on the ball and hence on the elastomeric seal.

A ball valve assembly is provided having an internally projecting pin on the actuating sleeve element for the ball valve which engages a recessed shoulder in the periphery of the valve to prevent accidental displacement of the ball valve from its fully open position.
