Methods and systems are provided for a cylinder head with an exterior wall including a removable camshaft carrier. In one example, a cylinder head includes a camshaft carrier removably couplable to a mount surface of the cylinder head and adapted to form a portion of an exterior wall of the cylinder head while coupled to the mount surface. The camshaft carrier may include a first section removably couplable to the cylinder head and a second section removably couplable to the first section, with the first section and the second section together shaped to receive a camshaft journal.

Methods and systems for an engine with removable camshaft carrier

Methods and systems are provided for oil flow for hydraulic lash adjusters of a vehicle engine. In one example, an engine cylinder bank includes a plurality of deactivatable hydraulic lash adjusters and a plurality of non-deactivatable hydraulic lash adjusters. A first linear oil supply passage and a second linear oil supply passage are formed within the cylinder bank and extend linearly through the cylinder bank without bends or curvature to the deactivatable and non-deactivatable hydraulic lash adjusters, with the deactivatable and non-deactivatable hydraulic lash adjusters having a same length.

Systems and methods for hydraulic lash adjuster oil flow

Methods and systems are provided for an engine including cams having different lobe profiles. In one example, cams of a first cam group drive a plurality of deactivatable cylinder valves and cams of a second cam group drive a plurality of non-deactivatable cylinder valves. The cams of the first cam group include a different lobe profile relative to cams of the second cam group.

In variable displacement engines, a portion of the intake valves have deactivatable valve lifters. When the engine conditions are such that some of the cylinders are to be deactivated, the intake and/or exhaust valve lifters in those cylinders are deactivated. Operation of the mechanism inside the lifter that is actuated to deactivate the valves can be harmed when particles in the engine oil get inside. To prevent small particles entering the valve lifter, a small filter is provided just upstream of the orifice into which oil enters the valve lifter. In other embodiments, a wire mesh formed into a coil is inserted into the recess. In some applications, a cage with snap-fitting connectors is installed over the filter to keep the wire mesh in place and properly coiled. The cage also fits into the recess. Such filter may also be applied to a hydraulic lash adjuster feature in a lifter.

Protection for hydraulic lifters

Methods and systems are provided for a cam carrier insert coupled to a cylinder head of an engine. In one example, a system may comprise: a cylinder head with a cam bearing tower; a cam carrier insert positioned in the cylinder head; and a camshaft, the camshaft directly supported by the cam bearing tower and directly supported by the cam carrier insert. By mounting a first portion of the cam shaft to the cam bearing tower and a second portion of the cam shaft on the cam carrier insert, the system may operate deactivatable and non-deactivatable intake or exhaust valves of one or more engine cylinders in the engine. In this way, packaging of engine components within the cylinder head may be improved while promoting better engine performance.

Cam carrier insert

In one example, a valve seat insert for a cylinder head seat pocket of an internal combustion engine is described. The valve seat insert comprises an annular body comprising a first material and including an inner surface, an outer surface opposite the inner surface, a front surface adjoining the inner and outer surfaces, and a back surface opposite the front surface adjoining the inner and outer surfaces. The front surface includes an inner circumference greater than an inner circumference of the back surface. The back surface includes a first recession inlaid with a sacrificial anode comprising a second material different from the first material and having an exposed surface. In this manner, it may be possible to substantially prevent corrosion of the cylinder head seat pocket.
