Embodiments of the present disclosure provide medium or high voltage fuses that employ spiral wound elements supported by rods, which may replace the usages of a ceramic core. In particular, the use of rods to wind and fix spiral fuse elements provides increased reliability by minimizing the fuse elements from drifting within the fuse assembly.

Glass rods fuse assembly and methods of manufacture

A power fuse with zinc-aluminum terminals is provided. The power fuse includes a housing having a first end and a second end. Coupled to the housing at the first end is a first terminal assembly fabricated from a zinc-aluminum alloy, and coupled to the housing at the second end is a second terminal assembly also fabricated from the zinc-aluminum alloy. The first and second terminal assemblies include a copper plating entirely covering an exterior of the zinc-aluminum alloy. A fuse element assembly is positioned inside the housing and is electrically connected between the first terminal assembly and the second terminal assembly.

Power fuse with zinc-aluminum alloy terminals and methods of fabrication

A power fuse for protecting an electrical load subject to transient load current cycling events in a direct current electrical power system is provided. The power fuse includes at least one fuse element assembly that includes one or more substrates, one or more sets of weak spots, and a conductor. The weak spots are formed on the substrates, and the substrates are longitudinally spaced apart from one another along the conductor. The conductor is separately provided from the substrate and the weak spots. The conductor includes one or more strips of metal having no stamped weak spot openings therein and therefore avoiding thermal-mechanical fatigue strain in the conductor when subjected to the transient load current cycling events. The conductor includes connector sections that are attached to respective ones of the sets of weak spots, and extending sections coupling the connector sections.

Systems and methods for estimating a thermal-mechanical fatigue in an electrical conductor in a thermal-mechanical fatigue assessment system include an electrical conductor having a cold resistance and a non-linear resistance when connected to an electrical power system, and a controller receiving temperatures of the conductor as inputs, wherein the controller is operable to estimate a service life of the conductor based on at least the input temperatures of the conductor and the cold resistance of the conductor.

Monitoring systems and methods for estimating thermal-mechanical fatigue in an electrical fuse

A high voltage, direct current circuit protection system includes a number n of weakened circuit conductors connected in series to one another and being fabricated in a manner to avoid metal fatigue in response to cyclic current loads. The system also includes a corresponding number n of cutting elements operable to sever the respective weakened circuit conductors, at least one energy storage element acting upon one of the cutting elements, a control element causing a release of stored energy in the at least one energy storage element and causing a displacement of at least one of the cutting elements to sever the respective weakened circuit conductor, and a corresponding number n of arc chambers arranged proximate each respective one of the weakened circuit conductors, wherein n is an integer greater than 1 and wherein no circuit protector coordination with the weakened circuit protectors is required.

High voltage direct current circuit protection system and method

A fusible disconnect switch device is provided. The disconnect switch includes a switch actuator, an actuator bias element, and a slider assembly. The switch actuator is selectively positioned between an opened position and a closed position. The actuator bias element includes a first end acting on the switch actuator and a second end coupled to the switch housing. The slider assembly is linked to the switch actuator. The slider assembly includes a first slider and a second slider each slidably movable with respect to the switch housing along a linear axis. The first slider is independently movable relative to the second slider. The actuator bias element and the slider assembly are responsive to the position of the switch actuator to effect a switch closing operation and a switch opening operation.

High current, compact fusible disconnect switch with dual slider assembly and an actuator bias element

A system includes a vehicle including a motive electrical power path; a power distribution unit including: a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path, the current protection circuit including a fuse and a contactor in a series arrangement with the fuse; a high voltage power input coupling including a first electrical interface for a high voltage power source; and a high voltage power output coupling including a second electrical interface for a motive power load, where the current protection circuit electrically couples the high voltage power input coupling to the high voltage power output coupling.

Fuse and contactor management for an electric mobile application

Method of manufacturing a high voltage power fuse having a dramatically reduced size facilitated by silicated filler material, a formed fuse element geometry, arc barrier materials and single piece terminal fabrications. The method includes: connecting a full-range fuse element assembly including first and second metal strip fuse elements defining a plurality of weak spots therein and being connected in parallel to one another, the first metal strip fuse element configured to uniquely respond to a short circuit current condition and the second metal strip fuse element configured to uniquely respond to an overload current condition and a set of arc barriers at selected locations to surround respective cross sectional portions are disclosed.

Compact high voltage power fuse and methods of manufacture

A printed fuse fabrication is provided. The printed fuse includes a low thermal conductivity ceramic substrate and a fusible element printed on the substrate. The fusible element printed on the substrate includes a series of portions of reduced printed thickness, defining weak spots for fusible operation of the fusible element, respectively separated by portions of increased printed thickness.

A system including a vehicle having a motive electrical power path, and a power distribution unit having a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path. The current protection circuit includes a first leg of the current protection circuit comprising a thermal fuse, a second leg of the current protection circuit comprising a solid state switch, and wherein the first leg and the second leg are coupled in a parallel arrangement. The system further includes a controller that includes a current detection circuit structured to determine a current flow through the motive electrical power path, and a fuse management circuit structured to provide a switch activation command in response to the current flow, wherein the solid state switch is responsive to the switch activation command.

A system including a vehicle having a motive electrical power path, and a power distribution unit having a current protection circuit disposed in the motive electrical power path. The current protection circuit includes a first leg of the current protection circuit comprising a thermal fuse, a second leg of the current protection circuit comprising a contactor. The first leg and the second leg may be coupled in a parallel arrangement. The system further has a controller that includes a current detection circuit structured to determine a current flow through the motive electrical power path, and a fuse management circuit structured to provide a contactor activation command in response to the current flow. The contactor may be responsive to the contactor activation command.
