A series of novel ketocoumarin photoinitiators are disclosed for use in radiation curing.

Compounds of formula (I): wherein Ar represents an, optionally substituted, aryl or heteroaryl group, R represents an, optionally substituted, aryl or heteroaryl group, an optionally substituted straight or branched chain C-alkyl, Ris H or methyl, X is an extender group, n is 0 or an integer between 1 and 12 inclusive, A is a polyol residue wherein the unsubstituted polyol from which the residue is derived has at least y OH groups, and y is an integer&#x3e;1, can easily be prepared, and are useful as synergists in radiation curing.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds of formula (I) having at least two conjugated aromatic rings at least one of which has a substituent comprising a cyclic carbonate group can be used as sensitizers for cationic photoinitiators, especially iodonium compounds, and may also function as monomers in cationically initiated radiation curable compositions, especially coating compositions, such as printing inks and varnishes.

Fused ring compounds, and their use as cationic photoinitiators

A multifunctional photoinitiator is obtainable as the reaction product of a multifunctional core material containing two or more reactive groups and a photoinitiator or a derivative thereof. The photoinitiator or its derivative has a reactive group capable of reacting with the reactive groups of the multifunctional core.
