A method and apparatus for managing a network access device is provided. Embedded within the access device are three distinct software layers. The first layer is a combined text-interface generator and Hypertext Transport Protocol client. The second layer is a combined Hypertext Transport Protocol server and Simple Network Management Protocol manager. The third layer is a Simple Network Management Protocol agent that has direct access to the configuration data of the access device. A user can manage the device through the embedded text-interface generator, by using an external HTTP client to communicate with the embedded HTTP server, or by using an external SNMP manager to communicate with the embedded SNMP agent. Techniques are disclosed for embedding SNMP information in messages passed between HTTP clients and servers.

Method and apparatus for providing multiple management interfaces to a network device

A device comprising an audio information processor to receive at least one audio stream encoded according to a first protocol by a remote network processing device, the audio stream having associated comfort noise information to indicate a level of background noise available for presentation during silence periods associated with the audio stream, the audio information processor to decode the received audio stream according to the first protocol and to encode the decoded audio stream according to a second protocol, and a background noise translator to convert the comfort noise information received with the audio stream into a format compatible with the second protocol.

An apparatus and method for communicating link status information for permanent virtual circuits that share a data link connection identifier. A first frame relay packet that includes link status information for a plurality of virtual circuits that each share a first data link connection identifier is received via a frame relay network. Using the link status information in the first frame relay packet, a second frame relay packet that conforms to a standard local management interface status message format is generated. The second frame relay packet is transmitted to customer premise equipment.

Segmented permanent virtual circuits

An apparatus and method for bundling frame relay packets under one or more common DLCIs. A plurality of frame relay packets is received in a frame relay access device. A common bundling DLCI is associated with each of the frame relay packets based on a configuration parameter that can be modified by a human operator to have at least a first state or a second state. When in the first state, the configuration parameter indicates that the common bundling DLCI is included in voice frames generated in the frame relay access device. In the second state, the configuration parameter indicates that the common bundling DLCI is not included in voice frames generated in the frame relay access device. Each of the frame relay packets has an initial DLCI which is used to determine a multiplexing value. Each of the frame relay packets is transmitted over a frame relay network using the common bundling DLCI and its respective multiplexing value.

The network nodes include segmentation and reassembly device for fragmenting variable length frames of user data into packets of a predefined length. A preferred embodiment uses ATM AAL5 segmentation and reassembly to construct cells. Header and trailer information is added to each of the cells for transport across the frame relay network.
