A transmission gearing arrangement produces at least nine forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of three shift elements in various combinations. One embodiment includes four simple planetary gear sets, three clutches, and three brakes. A second embodiment includes four simple planetary gear sets, four clutches, and two brakes. In this second embodiment, three of the clutches and one of the brakes form a four shift element module. A third embodiment includes two axis transfer gear pairs, three simple planetary gear sets, five clutches, and one brake.

Multi-speed transmission

A transmission gearing arrangement produces ten forward speed ratios and four reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of three shift elements in various combinations. Some embodiment includes four simple planetary gear sets and seven shift elements of which three or four are brakes. Another embodiment includes two axis transfer gear pairs in place of one of the planetary gear sets. One of the brakes is used only in reverse and may be a latch.

A transmission gearing arrangement includes four simple planetary gear sets, a range selection clutch, and five other clutches including one brake. The transmission is operated in high range by engaging the range selection clutch and in low range by disengaging the range selection clutch. In high range, the transmission produces eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of various combinations of three of the five other clutches. In low range, the transmission produces five forward speed ratios by selective engagement of various combinations of two of the other five clutches. The transmission can shift from the fourth low range ratio to the third high range ratio while the vehicle is in motion.

Multiple speed transmission with integrated low range

A family of transmission gearing arrangements produces at least nine forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of three shift elements in various combinations. Each disclosed transmission includes four planetary gear sets, three brakes, and either three or four clutches. One embodiment produces twelve forward speed ratios and two reverse speed ratios. Another embodiment produces thirteen forward speed ratios.

Transmissions with at least three gearing-arrangements with similar first and second gearing-arrangements that produce a number of transmissions having an eleven forward-speed and two reverse-speed ratios, having ten forward-speed and three reverse-speed ratios, and having five forward-speed and one reverse-speed ratios by selective engagement of three shift-elements in various combinations. Some embodiments include four simple planetary-gearsets and six shift-elements of which two or three are brakes. Another embodiment includes a double-pinion planetary-gearset and six shift-elements of which three are brakes. Other embodiments include three simple planetary-gearsets and five shift-elements of which one or two are brakes.

A family of transmission gearing arrangements provides ten forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratios by selective engagement of shift elements in various combinations. Four simple planetary gear sets are provided, each having a sun gear, a planet carrier, and a ring gear. One carrier is coupled to the input. At least one planetary gear set provides an underdrive speed relationship between a shaft extending from the carriers of that gear set and the output. At least two brakes and four clutches provide selective coupling between other shafts in the transmission.

A transmission gearing arrangement has four simple planetary gear sets and five or six shift elements. One embodiment has three brakes and three clutches and produces nine forward speeds by selective engagement of various combinations of three of the shift elements. A second embodiment has two brakes and four clutches and produces nine forward speeds by selective engagement of various combinations of three of the shift elements. A third embodiment has two brakes and three clutches and produces seven forward speeds by selective engagement of various combinations of two of the shift elements. Each embodiment may optionally include a passive one way brake that simplifies the control of certain shifts.

A vehicle includes axle housing, a differential and a ring gear, a scraper port, and a reservoir. The housing has a cover forming a heat exchanger having a coolant side and a lubricant side. The differential and ring gear are configured to pump a lubricating fluid. The scraper port is disposed at a bottom of the heat exchanger adjacent to the ring gear and is configured to direct the lubricating fluid through the lubricant side of the heat exchanger. The reservoir is disposed at a top of the heat exchanger and is configured to receive and store the lubricating fluid from the lubricant side of the heat exchanger.

Driveline thermal and lubricant flow management

Transmissions with at least four gearing-arrangements and six clutches that produce nine forward speeds and one reverse. The gearing-arrangements may be simple planetary gearsets. The six clutches may include one to three brakes, and at least one clutch is an input clutch and one an output clutch. The input-shaft of each transmission may be associated with a carrier of one of the simple planetary gearsets. The input-shaft may be associated with carrier-. The output-shaft of some transmissions may be associated with a carrier of another of the simple planetary gearsets. The output-shaft may be associated with carrier-. Sun and ring gears in gearing-arrangements may be connected to a transmission housing. Sun-and ring-may be grounds.

Nine speed automatic transmission

A transmission gearing arrangement has four simple planetary gear sets and five or six shift elements. A ring gear is fixedly held against rotation. A sun gear and a carrier are fixedly coupled to the input shaft. One embodiment has two brakes and three clutches and produces seven forward speeds by selective engagement of various combinations of two of the shift elements. Other embodiments have two brakes and four clutches and produce nine forward speeds by selective engagement of various combinations of two of the shift elements. Each embodiment may optionally include a passive one way brake that simplifies the control of certain shifts.

A transmission gearing arrangement produces eleven forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of three shift elements in various combinations. One embodiment includes four simple planetary gear sets, four clutches, and two brakes. Another embodiment includes two axis transfer gear pairs, three simple planetary gear sets, four clutches, and two brakes. Each of these embodiments may include a one way brake such that the first shift is non-synchronous. A third embodiment includes four simple planetary gear sets, four brakes, and two clutches.

A transmission gearing arrangement produces nine forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio by selective engagement of three shift elements in various combinations. Some embodiments includes four simple planetary gear sets and six shift elements of which two may be brakes. Other alternative embodiments may additionally include a third brake.
