A method for use in generating a computer-based visualization of 3D medical image data is described. The method includes receiving 3D medical image data and performing a selection process to select first image data forming a first portion of the 3D medical image data, the first image data representing a first anatomical object of a given type. An analysis process is performed on the first image data, a parameter of the analysis process being based on the given type of the first anatomical object. Based at least in part on a result of the analysis process, a visual parameter mapping for the first portion is determined, for use in a rendering process for generating a visualization of the 3D medical image data. Also described is a method of generating a computer-based visualization of 3D medical image data and an apparatus for performing the methods.

Method for use in generating a computer-based visualization of 3D medical image data

A computer-implemented method and a corresponding apparatus are provided for the provision of a two-dimensional visualization image having a plurality of visualization pixels for the visualization of a three-dimensional object represented by volume data for a user. Context information for the visualization is obtained by the evaluation of natural language and is taken into account in the visualization. The natural language can be in the form of electronic documents, which are assigned or can be assigned to the visualization process. In addition, the natural language can be in the form of a speech input of a user, during or after the visualization.

In order to prevent color bleeding, a method of volume rendering a three-dimensional (3D) dataset includes identifying, by a processor, a mask that defines a segmented volume within the 3D dataset. The processor identifies a position within the 3D dataset at or adjacent to a boundary defined by the mask, identifies a plurality of voxels within the 3D dataset that are adjacent to the identified position within the 3D dataset, and determine, for each voxel of the plurality of voxels, whether the respective voxel is inside or outside of the identified mask. The processor determines, for each voxel of the plurality of voxels, a weight for the respective voxel based on the determination of whether the respective voxel is inside or outside of the identified mask. The processor determines a voxel value for the identified position based on the determined weights and voxel values for the plurality of voxels, respectively.

Segmented volume rendering with color bleeding prevention

A display data set depicting a three-dimensional source data set of display parameters is generated through volume rendering. Integration distance is subdivided based on a fixed predetermined target sampling distance independent of a desired sampling distance. The number of subsections minus one correspond to integrations over different subsections with front and back values of the display parameter as a target sampling distance opacity. A contribution of the volume-rendering integral and a target sampling distance color coefficient are based on the target sampling distance opacity. Target sampling distance opacities and target sampling distance color coefficients are determined based on pre-integration tables for contributions of the volume-rendering integral. Third opacities are calculated and converted to the desired sampling distance from target sampling distance opacities and the ratio of desired sampling distance to target sampling distance. Third color coefficients are calculated, and the volume-rendering integral is determined from the contributions.

Generation of a display data set with volume rendering

A method, system and product are disclosed for volume rendering of medical images on a shared memory system implemented on a multi-socket mainboard with multiple multi-core processors and multiple last level caches, cores that share a cache being united in a socket. The method includes decomposing the image space to be used for rendering in regions, each region including a plurality of tiles; assigning two sockets to each of the decomposed regions; determining a tile enumeration scheme for a region; rendering all tiles within a region according to a determined tile enumeration scheme on the assigned two sockets until the respective region is finished; if a region is finished, assigning the two sockets to another region; and if no region is left, splitting an existing region of un-rendered tiles into sub-regions according to a splitting scheme and applying the steps recursively for the sub-regions.

Volume rendering on shared memory systems with multiple processors by optimizing cache reuse

A method for sampling volume data of an object in an imaging device is disclosed. The method includes creating a voxel dataset of a first volume associated with the object using a scanning device and saving the voxel dataset; defining a grid of sampling positions by casting rays through the first volume and choosing a number of points along a respective ray; choosing a sampling access pattern that defines a sequence of the sampling positions; selecting an interpolation scheme mapping the sampling access pattern to a voxel access pattern defining a sequence of the voxels of the voxel dataset; successively loading memory lines of a main memory comprising the data associated with the respective voxel into a cache memory if the memory line is not already present in the cache memory; and processing the data associated with the respective voxel, the cache memory access being optimized for rendering time performance.

Method for sampling volume data of an object in an imaging device

An embodiment of a method is disclosed for compressing digital images which can be displayed by a graphics card. An embodiment of the method includes providing an image by the graphics card; marking out a foreground region in the image provided on the basis of depth information provided in the graphics card; compressing the marked-out foreground region; simplifying the image by smoothing the foreground region marked out in the image; and separately compressing the simplified image.

Method for the image compression of an image comprising 3D graphics information

A system and method for rendering an MIP image that has reduced high frequency component loss and reduced chessboard artifacts. The method includes accessing volumetric data, having random noise. Rays are shot, or cast, through the volumetric data, onto a voxel grid, which has grid points. Sampling data along each ray is performed to obtain selected sample data points on the ray and a distance from a selected point to a nearest grid point is determined. A voxel intensity value is accessed at each selected point, as a function of the position of the selected point relative to the nearest grid point. The difference between the voxel intensity at each selected point is minimized an image is rendered from the volumetric data as a function of the minimizing step. Multiple methods may be used to minimize the difference between the voxel intensity at each selected point. These include for example 1.) applying a localized low pass filter, 2.) applying a localized high order interpolation kernel, and 3.) applying localized distance remapping methods.

Systems and methods of image rendering from datasets

A method of navigation in three-dimensional, electronic image data sets is disclosed, whereby the image data sets contain three-dimensional image data subsets. The method includes optically representing at least one two-dimensional projection of an image data set that includes a two-dimensional subprojection of at least one image data subset, optically highlighting the at least one two-dimensional subprojection, receiving a user input directed to the selection of a certain subprojection, and optically representing, in accordance with said user input, at least one additional two-dimensional projection of the image data set that includes a two-dimensional projection of the selected image data subset. The method can be used for an image data set that is formed by fusion of at least two source image data sets. The source image data sets can especially comprise computer tomography and a positron-emission tomography image data set.

Method of navigation in three-dimensional image data

This invention describes an optimization and view dependency reduction method for multiplanar reformatting (MPR) of slice-based volume images. This method utilizes a traversal scheme that allows for efficient access of the computer memory layout of a sliced based volume, and therefore optimizes overall processing time. This method does not require changes to the volume memory layout or additional volume memory. Instead, efficient memory access is achieved by adaptive traversal patterns on the reformatting planes. The traversal pattern is adapted on-the-fly during rendering as the reformatting plane location and orientation is changed arbitrarily relative to the volume. In this way, the typical speed differences between various reformatting planes orientations caused by inefficient memory access is greatly reduced. Computer cache coherency, SIMD coherent implementation, and multiprocessing environments are also considered in the design of the traversal pattern.

Optimization and view dependency reduction for processing slice-based volumes

Multiplanar reformatting visualization is provided with multiple scrolling speeds. A plurality of buffers is provided. Each buffer stores composites of data from different planes. The amount of compositing to generate a total composite for a visualization may be less since the division into partial composites may reduce addition and subtraction or other compositing operations. One level of partial composite buffers may be used. The total is recomputed for each visualization. In other embodiments, a hierarchal buffer structure is used. For example, a total composite buffer is provided in addition to the partial composite buffers. By re-compositing the partial composites before and after adjustment for scrolling increment from the total composite buffer, the total composite is updated for scrolling. Two or more levels of buffers may be used.
