An RJ jack includes a housing having an interior chamber with a plurality of contacts which are deflectable upon insertion of a plug into the chamber. A plurality of projections is provided for limiting the extent of the deflection of selected contacts. In a preferred embodiment, the RJ jack is an RJ45 and the projections are fins located beneath the outermost contacts of the RJ45 jack.

Preventing damage to RJ jacks from improper plug insertion

A telecom circuit protection apparatus includes a housing having at least first and second temperature responsive circuit protection devices, such as a fuse and a thyristor disposed therein. A first metal lead is connected to respective first terminals of the first and second circuit protection devices and is structured and arranged such as to transfer heat freely between the second circuit protection device and the first circuit protection device. A second metal lead is connected to a second terminal of the first device and a third metal lead is connected to a second terminal of the second device. The first, second and third metal leads extend from the housing. Advantageously, the portions of the first, second and third metal leads extending from the housing have reduced cross-sections to reduce heat loss from the apparatus and are formed and made solderable for use as connection points for surface mount connection to the apparatus. To protect multiple service lines, a circuit protector is provided for each of them. In this case, the multiple circuit protectors may advantageously be collocated in a common housing having either a common or separate ground terminal(s).

Telecom circuit protection apparatus

A connector is provided with grounding contacts electrically connected to the host device's ground. The grounding contacts are positioned in the insertion path of a plug that is connected to a cable. The grounding contacts momentarily electrically contact the electrical contacts on the plug to discharge electrostatic charges in the cable to ground. A jack behind the grounding contacts in the housing receives the inserted plug. The jack includes jack contacts that are intended for making electrical contact with the plug contacts when the plug is fully inserted. Electrical connection between the plug contacts and the grounding contacts established as the plug is first inserted in the connector is broken prior to the electrical connection between the plug contacts and the jack contacts being established.
