The illumination device has a projection device for projecting information onto the recessed grip. A method is used to operate a domestic appliance which contains the door having the recessed grip and the projection device for shining light onto the recessed grip, in which method information is projected onto the recessed grip by the projection device. The domestic appliance can be a refrigerator, a freezer, a preservation appliance or combinations thereof.
