A pneumatic driver is disclosed. The pneumatic driver includes a frame and a shaft movable between an extended driving position and a retracted position relative to the frame. A first inflatable air bladder is supported by the frame. The first inflatable air bladder is operatively connected to the shaft so that when the first air bladder is inflated, the shaft is moved into an extended driving position. A second inflatable air bladder is supported by the frame and operatively connected to the shaft. When the second air bladder is inflated, the shaft is moved to a retracted position. A valve manifold operatively connects first and second air bladders for controlling inflation and deflation of the air bladders. The frame includes longitudinal guide rods and transverse frame members fixed to the guide rods. A shaft support member having the shaft mounted thereto is slidably mounted on the guiderods. Support rods are mounted to the shaft support member by bolts received in orifices to provide a clearance fit.

In a hot strip rolling mill a velocity damping compensator circuit is added to the current regulating loop of the looper motor drive generating a torque on the looper arm mechanism between roll stands, thereby to prevent disturbances when applying the looper arm and looper roller against the strip being rolled.

Rolling mill looper control system

Method and apparatus are disclosed for controlling the final output gauge of strip material passing through a tandem rolling mill in which the final reduction in gauge is substantially accomplished at the next to the last stand. An automatic gauge control (AGC) loop responsive to the changes in speed of the next to the last stand, controls the speed regulators for the last two stands. Responsive to the next to the last stand speed, the AGC loop provides a variable gain at low and high mill speeds respectively to appropriately adjust the control signals to the speed regulators for the last two stands. Interstand tension control between the last two stands is provided by modification of the speed regulator for the last stand.

Method and apparatus for automatic gauge control system for tandem

An inverse timer for a process line is disclosed in which the forward end of the material is detected at a known distance from an instrument which is to be activated. The inverse timer is initiated upon forward end detection, and in a small increment of time, .DELTA.T seconds later, the instrument is activated; .DELTA.T is equal to the time required for the material to move from the point of detection to the location of the instrument, i.e., the transport time minus the reaction time of the instrument. The inverse timer includes two potentiometers for independently adjusting the transport time and the reaction times. Since the velocity of the material may vary widely during production, the inverse timer enables rapid adjustments to be made to accommodate for these new conditions without the laborious empirical determination of optimum settings of interacting potentiometers.

An active filter is disclosed for providing improved notch and band pass filters. The output to input frequency response of an active filter is mathematically expressed as a ratio of two polynominals in the Laplace operator S. In any notch filter, the coefficient of the S term in the numerator must be reduced to zero, while in any band pass arrangement the coefficient of the S term in the denominator is reduced to zero. The improved notch filter provides an input circuit for the operational amplifier portion of the filter which eliminates the S term in the numerator so that adjustments to reduce this term are unnecessary. Similarly, in the improved band pass filter, the S term in the denominator is eliminated in the feedback circuit provided for the operational amplifier, so that adjustment is unnecessary to eliminate the coefficient of S.

A speed control system is disclosed for a direct current motor drive energized by a thyristor armature supply. Voltage regulation for the thyristor supply is through a parallel current controller in which an armature current controller is arranged in parallel with positive and negative rate current controllers, the output of this parallel combination being applied as a voltage control signal to the thyristor supply through a parallel switch which mandates priority of control. Normally, the current controller will determine the thyristor armature supply voltage, but if the armature current rate exceeds a preset current rate reference, the parallel switch intercedes and the appropriate rate current controller takes over control of the thyristor supply voltage. When the thyristor armature supply current rate goes below the rate reference setting, the armature current controller will again resume control of the thyristor supply voltage.

D.C. motor speed control apparatus having both armature current rate

This invention relates to an improved continuous calcining apparatus for consistently and controllably producing from calcinable reactive solid compounds of uranium, such as ammonium diuranate, uranium dioxide (UO.sub.2) having an oxygen to uranium ratio of less than 2.2. The apparatus comprises means at the outlet end of a calciner kiln for receiving hot UO.sub.2, means for cooling the UO.sub.2 to a temperature of below 100.degree. C and conveying the cooled UO.sub.2 to storage or to subsequent UO.sub.2 processing apparatus where it finally comes into contact with air, the means for receiving, cooling and conveying being sealed to the outlet end of the calciner and being maintained full of UO.sub.2 and so operable as to exclude atmospheric oxygen from coming into contact with any UO.sub.2 which is at elevated temperatures where it would readily oxidize, without the use of extra hydrogen gas in said means.

Uranium dioxide calcining apparatus and method

This disclosure relates to a synchronous motor KVAR regulation system which utilizes a synchronous motor connected to a power distributor line to generate corrective (capacitive) KVARS to automatically follow and compensate for KVARS being generated by the other loads on the distribution line. The system takes into consideration the thermal capacity (motor rated current) of the synchronous motor so that the KVAR regulation system is not permitted to overexcite the synchronous motor for long periods of time. The KVAR regulation system also programs a minimum motor field current with respect to the motor load so as to insure that the synchronous motor will not pull out of synchronism during peak loads.

This disclosure relates to a parallel speed regulator system for a plurality of d.c. motors operated on a common bus having a single armature electrical supply. The speed control, current limiting, and field current controllers for each motor are arranged in parallel and connected to a resistor-diode switching network to provide a switching order of priority: (1) maximum and minimum field current controllers (2) armature current limit controllers and (3) speed controller. This parallel speed regulator system provides all the inherent advantages of the multiloop controller arrangement together with automatic adjustments which are a function of the instantaneous motor operating point, so that the dynamic response of the motor remains the same regardless of perturbations in the operating points.

A regulating system for direct current motor control having an inner and an outside loop is prevented from winding up in the outside loop, when the inner loop saturates, by a clamping circuit storing the value of the controlling voltage of the outside loop reached at the moment of saturation and generating an overriding error signal by reference to said stored value for providing effective control after saturation has ended.

In a single-stand, or multi-stand rolling mill, when the automatic gauge control circuit controlling the roll speed of one stand saturates, the gauge delivery of such stand is altered by changing the roll gap of the stand in such a way as to restore normal operation of the automatic gauge control out of saturation.

A stand speed reference circuit is disclosed for providing speed reference signals to each of a plurality of selected stands in a continuous tandem rolling mill. U.s. pat. No. 3,852,983 to Cook for 'Work Strip Gauge Change During Rolling in a Tandem Rolling Mill' discloses a method for changing to a new gauge schedule without shutting down the mill, by using a precalculated multiplier to successively and progressively change the mill stand speeds of all the stands save the pivot stand, the speed of which remains constant at the previously scheduled rate. Interstand tension regulators between the stands automatically change the delivery gauge at the stand of entry of the gauge change point of the moving strip. The present disclosure provides an analog stand speed reference circuit to realize the Cook teaching without disturbing the mill by introducing spurious interstand tensions.

A direct current motor speed control system is disclosed including a motor armature current controller operative in conjunction with a speed controller and a current reference ramp function generator, such that an effective clamp is provided on the current reference rate of change in the motor speeed control operation in relation to providing less amplification of the noise frequency portion of the motor speed actual feedback signal supplied to the speed controller.
