A system for the destruction of volatile organic compounds while generating power. In a preferred embodiment the system comprises a combustor and a reaction chamber connected to an exit of the combustor. A primary inlet to the combustor supplies a primary fuel to the combustor. A secondary fuel, comprising air and an amount of one or more volatile organic compounds, is supplied to a compressor, which compresses the secondary fuel and directs the secondary fuel to the combustor and the reaction chamber. The system is suitably configured to enable the stoichiometric reaction of the two fuels in a manner sufficient to destroy the volatile organic compounds contained in the secondary fuel and power a turbine engine connected to an exit of the reaction chamber.

Method and apparatus for the destruction of volatile organic compounds

A device and method capable of measuring the optical rotary and linear position of items, that is reliable, accurate and capable of operating in harsh environments. The present invention utilizes optics to measure rotary and linear position. Unlike the prior art the present invention relies on the optical angle to determine position rather than an analog signal or intensity. Because of this, the present invention is capable of providing accurate results in high temperature, harsh and dirty environments. Further, the present invention reduces the need for time consuming and costly replacements at the sensing end.

High-temperature optical rotary and linear position sensor

A dual function rapid shutdown and ecology system for fuel delivery systems for engines, specially aircraft gas turbine engines, is disclosed. The dual function is accomplished in a single module operated by a single electro-magnetic solenoid valve commanded by the engine electronic control unit. Upon actuation of the solenoid valve, a large spring loaded piston strokes to the extreme of its travel creating a cavity having a volume sufficient to accommodate all fuel leftover in the fuel manifold and distribution system at shutdown, thus preventing atmospheric pollution or engine damage upon subsequent operation. Simultaneous with actuation of the solenoid valve, fuel pressure differentials cause a small piston to stroke to the extreme of its travel opening fuel passageways and causing all the fuel being delivered to the engine combustion chamber to be bypassed back to pump inlet, thus effectively accomplishing the rapid shutdown function. An alternate embodiment allows for use of the dual function system on engines employing low pressure differentials along the various stages of the fuel control system manifold or where the ecology function is not required.

Rapid shutdown and ecology system

A fuel system for delivering fuel from a fuel source to combustor in a gas turbine engine has a pump receiving fuel flow from the fuel source and producing a pressurized fuel flow that flows to a flow meter that measures the fuel flow and generates a signal thereof. A bypass valve bypasses, to the input side of the pump, a portion of the pressurized fuel flow before it reaches the flow meter. An electronic control unit is included that receives the signal and in response thereto adjusts the bypass valve until the measured fuel flow equals a predetermined desired fuel flow stored in the electronic control unit. The fuel system is also self-calibrating.

The apparatus (5) comprises an electrohydraulic solenoid (6) secured to and in fluid communication wiht a metering valve body (8). A cylindrical spool (15) is disposed in a channel (16) formed in the valve body (8), and variably blocks a flow path (74,90,75) extending through the valve body in response to variations in fluid pressure in a chamber (68) which is defined by the solenoid (6), the valve body (8), and the spool (15). Fluid is delivered to and vented from the chamber (68) through the solenoid (6), and the pressure in the chamber varies with the duty cycle of pulses communicated to the solenoid (6).
