A cartridge for use in charge transfer imaging comprising a flexible dielectric substrate carrying sets of driver electrodes and finger electrodes, the electrodes being separated by a dielectric layer. The respective electrodes extend in different directions to form a charge generating matrix in a first central portion generally corresponding to the extent of the dielectric layer. Each of the electrodes has individual contacts which extend to the sides of the dielectric layer. The flexible substrate is deformable from its natural planar form to a U-shape, the charge generating matrix and the dielectric layer being located on a first central portion of the substrate, and the contacts of the electrodes being located on second and third side portions of the substrate. A method of manufacturing the cartridge is also disclosed.

Charge transfer imaging cartridge

The invention provides an electrostatic print cartridge for use in placing electrostatically charged dots on a charge receiving surface to build a latent image for subsequent toning. The cartridge includes a rigid spine to prevent the cartridge from bending during construction; a dielectric substrate attached to the spine with driver electrodes arranged in parallel lines between the spine and the dielectric substrate; and finger electrodes arranged on the opposite side of the substrate intersecting the driver electrodes and defining a matrix of apertures aligned with the intersection points of the driver and finger electrodes. The apertures in each finger electrode cover a segment of a complete image and are arranged so that the sequence of creating dots is such that primary dots are laid down separated from one another in each segment and subsequently secondary or intermediate dots are placed in spaces between the primary dots as the segment is filled with dots.

Charged particle printer

A print cartridge is described for charged particle deposition of latent images on a receptor surface adapted to move longitudinally. The cartridge has driver electrodes extending transversely with respect to the movement of the receptor surface and a dielectric covers the driver electrodes. Finger electrodes on the dielectric extend angularly with respect to the driver electrodes with the dielectric separating the finger and driver electrodes. The finger electrodes define primary and secondary apertures where the driver and finger electrodes intersect for depositing latent images of discrete dots spaced transversely on the receptor surface upon selective activation of the driver and finger electrodes. The apertures in each finger electrode are counted in the direction of motion of the receptor surface and the majority are separated transversely from one another by at least two dot spaces and the second and last apertures are spaced transversely with reference respectively to the first and last-but-one apertures in the same transverse direction.

Venetian blinding

A charge transfer imaging cartridge features driver electrodes extending in a first direction and finger electrodes extending in a second direction and defining edge structure straddling the driver electrodes. The driver and finger electrodes are separated by a flexible dielectric layer, preferably a silicone modified polymer.

There is disclosed a print cartridge for use in charge transfer imaging comprising a dielectric substrate, driver electrodes extending in a first direction along the substrate, a dielectric layer covering the electrodes, and finger electrodes extending in a second direction across the dielectric layer and defining apertures having edge structures straddling the driver electrodes. A dielectric spacer covers the finger electrodes and defines apertures corresponding to the apertures of the finger electrodes. The dielectric spacer itself is covered by a screen electrode which also defines apertures corresponding to the apertures of the dielectric spacer and the finger electrodes. The apertures of the finger electrodes, the dielectric spacer, and the screen electrode collectively define a plurality of blind holes. A plurality of passages having first and second ends are provided through one or more components of the cartridge, the first ends adapted for communication with a fluid supply and the second ends opening into the blind holes. Fluid from the supply passes through the passages into the apertures to exit from the screen electrode apertures to help prevent ingress of toner particles to the blind holes and to provide a purging effect to dislodge particles collecting in the holes. In a further aspect of the present invention the fluid supplied to the cartridge is a gas other than air.

Print cartridge

The invention provides a method of making an ionographic cartridge for use with a dielectric coated drum to lay electrostatic images on the drum for subsequent toning. The method includes the steps of making a printed circuit board carrying on one of its faces a plurality of driver electrodes; attaching to the face of the board a dielectric layer sufficient to cover the driver electrodes; providing finger electrodes supported individually between parallel strips of dielectric tapes; and adhering the finger electrodes to the dielectric layer with the finger electrodes straddling the driver electrodes and the tapes spaced to either side of the printed circuit board.

Ionic print cartridge and printer

In one of its aspects the invention provides an ionographic print cartridge for use in placing discrete dots of electrostatic charge on a drum to build a latent image for subsequent toning. The print cartridge includes a substrate of a dielectric material having sufficient rigidity to resist deformation during assembly; driver electrodes printed on the substrate and consisting of parallel conductors extending longitudinally and having lead portions terminating at the conductors and extending generally transversely from ends of the conductors for making electrical connections to the driver electrodes. A dielectric layer covers at least the conductors with the conductors at a first side of the layer, and finger electrodes are positioned at the opposite side of the dielectric layer. The finger electrodes define edge structures straddling the driver electrodes and having individual contacts at the sides of the driver electrodes for making electrical connections to the finger electrodes. A method of manufacture is also described.
