A surge protective device includes a first electrical terminal, a second electrical terminal, and an overvoltage protection circuit connected between the first electrical terminal and the second electrical terminal. The overvoltage protection circuit includes a spark gap assembly between the first electrical terminal and the second electrical terminal. The spark gap assembly includes a first spark gap (SG) electrode and a second SG electrode defining a spark gap therebetween, and a trigger circuit operative to ignite a main electric arc between the first and second SG electrodes across the spark gap. The trigger circuit includes a groove defined in the second SG electrode, and a trigger member disposed in the groove. The trigger member is operative to assist formation of a trigger arc.

Surge protective devices

A surge protective device (SPD) includes a first electrical terminal, a second electrical terminal, and an overvoltage protection circuit connected between the first and second electrical terminals. The overvoltage protection circuit includes a gas discharge tube and a current management circuit connected in series to the gas discharge tube. The current management circuit includes a varistor and a resistor that are connected in parallel between a first node of the current management circuit and a second node of the current management circuit.

An electrical fuse assembly includes a housing defining a hermetically sealed chamber, first and second terminal electrodes mounted on the housing, a gas contained in the hermetically sealed chamber, a fuse element electrically connecting the first and second terminal electrodes, and at least one spark gap between the first and second terminal electrodes. The fuse element and the at least one spark gap are disposed in the hermetically sealed chamber.

An electrical fuse assembly includes electrically conductive first and second electrodes, and a bimetallic fuse element. The bimetallic fuse element electrically connects the first and second electrodes. The bimetallic fuse element is configured to disintegrate, and thereby disconnect the first electrode from the second electrode, in response to a current exceeding a prescribed trigger current of the bimetallic fuse element for at least a prescribed duration.

A gas discharge tube assembly includes a multi-cell gas discharge tube (GDT). The multi-cell GDT includes a housing defining a GDT chamber, a plurality of inner electrodes located in the GDT chamber, a trigger resistor located in the GDT chamber, and a gas contained in the GDT chamber. The inner electrodes are serially disposed in the chamber in spaced apart relation to define a series of cells and spark gaps. The trigger resistor includes an interface surface exposed to at least one of the cells. The trigger resistor is responsive to an electrical surge through the trigger resistor to generate a spark along the interface surface and thereby promote an electrical arc in the at least one cell.

Gas discharge tube assemblies

A gas discharge tube includes a housing defining a chamber, first and second terminal electrodes mounted on the housing, a plurality of inner electrodes located in the chamber, and a gas contained in the chamber. The inner electrodes are serially disposed in the chamber in spaced apart relation to define a series of spark gaps from the first terminal electrode to the second terminal electrode. The chamber is hermetically sealed.
