The pedicle screw assembly includes a threaded screw extending from a tip to a head. A tulip head is coupled to the head of the screw. A hollow interior of the tulip head has a slot which receives a spine rod therein. A locking nut and preferably also a saddle and locking cap bear on the spine rod and secure the spine rod within the slot of the tulip head and against the head of the screw. The head of the screw is semi-spherical. Portions of the tulip head and structures residing within the tulip head which abut against the head are also preferably semi-spherical. The saddle and locking cap abut against the spine rod with semi-cylindrical surfaces, such that surface contact is provided against the spine rod for secure coupling of the spine rod to the pedicle screw.

Pedicle screw

The system includes multiple pedicle screws anchored to multiple vertebra, at least one of which needs to be de-rotated about a central spine axis relative to adjacent vertebrae. Elongate posts are attached to the pedicle screws and extend away from the pedicle screws. A holder, such as in the form of multiple clamps and bars and a de-rotation rod, hold the posts together after de-rotation of a mis-rotated vertebra. With the vertebra held where desired, a spine rod can then be attached to heads of the pedicle screws to hold the vertebrae in their desired positions. After spine rod attachment, the posts and associated portions of the system other than the pedicle screws and spine rods can then be removed, with the pedicle screws and spine rods typically remaining implanted to hold the vertebrae in their desired and de-rotated positions.

Scoliosis de-rotation system and method

A crosslink is provided for joining two spine rods. The crosslink includes an elongate tie rod and a pair of housings at each end of the tie rod. The housings are preferably identical and have independent fasteners including a spine rod fastener and a tie rod fastener for connecting each housing to one of the spine rods and fixation of the tie rod. The tie rod fasteners include a pair of hemisphere clamps residing within a chamber in the housing which grip the tie rod therebetween to fix the tie rod to the clamp when a set screw applies a clamping force on the hemisphere clamps. The tie rod fastener is adjustable, so that both translation of the tie rod relative to the housings and rotation about three mutually perpendicular axes can be accommodated for orienting of the housings relative to the tie rod precisely where desired.
