Disclosed is a phosphate-free aqueous acidic conversion coating comprising zinc sulfate and sulfuric acid. The conversion coating finds special use as a conversion coating to metal substrates prior to application of a cold forming lubricant or prior to application of a paint. The conversion coatings according to the present disclosure avoid the issues associated with phosphate containing conversion coatings but provide similar benefits to phosphate-based conversion coatings. Optional components of the conversion coating solutions include one or more of pH adjustment neutralizers, coating stabilizers, coating accelerators, coating refiners, etchants, paint adhesion promotors and mixtures thereof. In an additional option, manganese oxide can be used in place of zinc oxide.

Acid zinc sulfate metal pretreatment

Disclosed is a lubricant for use in cold forming of a metal. The lubricant comprises a mixture of at least one lubricating compound and at least one starch. The starch adheres the lubricating compound to the metal surface. The present lubricant completely removes the need to pre-coat the metal with a zinc phosphate coating to adhere the lubricating compound to the metal. The present lubricant eliminates several steps required in processes that utilize zinc phosphate pre-coatings. In addition, the lubricant of the present invention is easily removed after the cold forming operations unlike zinc phosphate coatings.

Lubricant for metal cold forming processes and methods of use of the same

The present invention provides a bimetal laminate structure and improved method for manufacturing the same. The method includes: applying a layer of adhesive to a metallic substrate; and laminating a decorative metallic sheet to the metallic substrate in such a manner that substantially all surface defects and all read through appearance along an outer surface of the decorative metallic sheet are eliminated. The resultant bimetal laminate includes a decorative metallic layer consisting of a first metallic material, and a metallic substrate consisting of a second metallic material that is different from the first metallic material. The metal substrate has a thickness that is greater than the thickness of the decorative metallic layer. An adhesive layer is disposed between, and spans substantially the entirety of the decorative metallic layer and metallic substrate to rigidly attach the same.

Bimetal laminate structure and method of making the same

This invention is directed to an improved method of coating a substrate. The improvement includes applying to the substrate a rinse composition which contains one or more surface energy-modifying compounds. The invention is further directed to an improved method of producing weldable parts and the parts prepared by this method. The invention is especially useful for automotive parts using weldable pre-painted metal substrates to which are applied essentially zero VOC powder coatings.

Method of powder coating weldable substrates

A method and device are provided for measuring and/or adjusting the cleaning performance of a cleaning liquid. One method of the invention includes determining a control value (i.e., the number of drops of the cleaning liquid to provide a selected volume) indicative of when the cleaning performance of the cleaning liquid is at or approaching an unacceptable level. At least one substrate can be contacted with the cleaning liquid and a drop number for the cleaning liquid (i.e., the number of drops of the cleaning liquid to provide the selected volume) again measured. At least one cleaning agent, such as at least one surfactant, can be added to the cleaning liquid when the measured drop number is at or near the control value. In one embodiment, the cleaning agent can be added until the measured drop number is at or near a baseline drop number for the cleaning liquid (i.e., the number of drops of the cleaning liquid when cleaning performance is acceptable).

Method and device for evaluating and/or adjusting the cleaning performance of a cleaning liquid

A method of cleaning interior surfaces of fluid delivery systems including (a) passing through the system an abrasive cleaner composition including at least one liquid carrier containing solubilizable abrasive particles, at least some of which are in non-solubilized form, effective to abrade the material to be removed from the interior surfaces, and (b) rinsing the system with at least one fluid effective to (i) displace the carrier and (ii) remove the abrasive particles, at least partially by such chemical means as dissolution or decomposition or neutralization. Optionally, the method can include a first step of contacting the inside surfaces of the fluid delivery system with a pretreatment fluid capable of softening or loosening the material that is to be cleaned from the internal surfaces of the delivery system for a time sufficient to soften or loosen unwanted material. A cleaning kit including the abrasive cleaner and rinsing fluid is also provided.
